Gun Control in the Modern Era
In the United States citizens have a great deal of rights compared to other countries. The U.S. constitution gives citizens an unprecedent number of rights for gun ownership compared to its peer developed countries (Bokat-Lindell). The United States also has a significantly higher rate of gun related violence than developed peer countries as well (Bokat-Lindell). Although there is a need for some individuals to own arms, there should be restrictions in place match our modern society as the nation has changed since the constitution was written.

The Assassination of the President of Haiti, Jovenel Moise
On July 7th, 2021 the president of Haiti, Jovenel Moise was assassinated in his bedroom at his private home. It was reported he died instantly and that the first lady was wounded and rushed to get medical care in Florida in the United States. The news had spread across the country and in Port-au-Prince there was a mix of emotions ranging from joy, sadness and panic. The assassination took place during other crises that were happening in Haiti, continuing to upset the republic, the first Black-led in the world after gaining independence and freedom in the slave revolution of the 19th century from France.

Videoconferencing in Distance Learning
Deal (2002) focused on distance learning and defined the term distance learning as the instructor and the student are separated by either time or distance. Deal (2002) explained that there are several benefits of distance learning including that it is affordable, effective and efficient while providing the student and teacher flexibility in time and location and offering interactive and multi-sensory experiences. According to Deal (2002) there are two basic modes associated with distance learning, synchronous and asynchronous. Videoconferencing is defined as synchronous mode as it may be a one-to-many or one-to-one environment where learning in real-time (p.25), continued with asynchronous mode as the learning takes place at a time selected by the learner and the learner progresses at his or her own pace independent of others (p.26). Deal (2002) also6 stated that the students who are shy and retiring in a traditional classroom overcame this in a distant environment. Unlike in a physical classroom where these students normally feel misplaced, they were found to become more confident when lessons were conducted by videoconference. This is because students have more control over their surroundings when education is delivered using this method.

Old Age and Security Benefits in the U.S.
There is concern about the fact that our social security program is lacking the ability to sustain itself financially in the coming years. There have been suggestions made as options for fixing the issue. There are no easy choices in the matter and there is no “quick fix” that will make the problem disappear. It is important to choose the best solution based on what will affect those who rely on the social security program, those who will in the near future and the American tax payer. Looking at the options available it is clear that the best way to address the situation is to plan to reduce social security benefits at a later date with a grandfather clause to omit anyone who is in receipt of the benefits before the date they are reduced.

Business Communication with LEGO
Communicating with customers is a large portion of performing retail business. Customer satisfaction builds a strong company reputation and builds trust with the consumer. It also builds a bond with an individual customer helping to create a loyal customer base in a rounded manner. When it comes to a company like LEGO the popular toy brick manufacturer, this can become a generational tie. Parents who loved the product pass that down to their children and if their experience with them was positive when interacting with customer care they certainly will share that as a story in passing.

Creatures of Fiction Literary Analysis
The writing “Creatures of Fiction” by Peter Van Inwagen explores the philosophical notion that logically if we are able to describe a fictional character it must exist. He compares this view of philosophers that use the Meinongian perspective to that of the views of philosophers using an anti-Meinongian perspective. Using various examples through literature, particularly 19th century, Van Inwagen argues that without the use of a Meinongian perspective we are not looking deep enough into what is being said. If by only taking the literal description we miss the underlying meanings behind the text in some circumstances. The issue with this is that explaining fictional characters and giving them definitive properties can be very difficult. Knowing when to look beyond the literal writings for a deeper context, or not to look deeper can be a large part of that issue.

Coraline: Literary Summary
Coraline is a fantasy, science fiction novel written by Neil Gaiman and features illustrations by Dave McKean. The story follows the adventure of Coraline Jones, a young girl who has recently moved, her relationship with her parents and a twisted reality she finds herself in after finding a small door in her new home. The story follows classic literary elements for the genre with magic, a setting that completely developed and a variety of characters that are complex and established. I found it to be a very enjoyable read that was hard to put down filled with dark illustrations that helped my imagination run wild with the story. Children will benefit from the lessons in Coraline and it is also an easy read, this makes it ideal for beginner and intermediate readers to complete.

Writer Contrast Between Ada Limón and Wesley Morris
“In That Dark Room” is a writing by Ada Limón that tells the story of how she and other struggling ladies find comfort in performing karaoke in a New York city bar. She passionately speaks of the influences great artists have had over her throughout her life and describes that her original ambitions before becoming a writer, were actually to sing. “The Videos That Rocked America. The Song That Knows Our Rage” by Wesley Morris speaks about racism in the United States. The author tells us about recent events that have shocked the nation and how African Americans have taken to recording the hateful actions taken towards them on video, most commonly using their phones. Both writings take a different approach to draw the reader in and try to set a mood for the reader. They are based on a different subject but share a particular theme in that music influences the emotions of the writers and helps them through the process of expelling them. In the case of Ada Limón, singing is used as a therapeutic tool. She is able to find a song that suits her current mood and sing it out to make herself feel better. With Wesley Morris music invokes emotion and allows him to process deep feelings of grief.

Golden Age of Hollywood: Cleopatra (1963)
Cleopatra is a movie about an icon of ancient Egypt. The film stars an icon of the silver screen, Elizabeth Taylor and features a rich story with a complex plot. The story follows Cleopatras rise to becoming the Queen of the Nile until her death and is set at a time when Egypt was at a turning point in its civilization. The film influenced how we view ancient Egypt today, a monumental production using vibrant and elaborate sets, a star-studded cast and an immense number of extras.

What to do About Afghan Asylum Seekers and ‘Remain in Mexico’ Policy?
The topics of those that seek asylum in the United States, those that come as refugees and the ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy are matters that need to be resolved. I am of the opinion that allowing asylum seekers to enter the United States can cause more harm than good but there should be considerations taken for certain circumstances. When it comes to refugees from Afghanistan who assisted our armed forces, we made them a promise and we need to keep it. These two topics are very different and have different underlying circumstances.

A Wet World Run on Cow Dung
From reading the articles “As a warming climate delivers more rain…” (Sellers, 2020) and “As the Livestock Industry Touts Manure-to-Energy Projects…” (Gustin, 2020) I found a great deal of information given about industry and municipalities when it comes to how they are managing their waste. The articles give an insight into how they approach initiatives to attempt to make their production of waste appear to be more echo-friendly. The pork industry for example is working with public utility companies to create bio-gas which sounds like a good alternative to all the undesirable pollution but is proven it is not. The city of Philadelphia is working closely with the EPA to try and find ways to reduce the contamination they create using technological initiatives and this seems to be more promising. Through these readings I have learned that industry has found ways to keep up appearances of being green in some instances while entire cities are taking initiatives to actually tackle the problem. Climate change is a legitimate issue we all have to face and industry can not be allowed to continue to ignore it.
