With the Summer Tarkov Wipe Incoming, Keep this in Mind
With the summer wipe fast approaching, I wanted to take a moment of your time and just quickly go over some things that may hopefully keep you in the right mindset should you be deciding that you want to play this upcoming wipe cycle. It’s been a long time coming, and while many of us are excited to have the game reset, others are either going to take a break which is totally understandable or are nervous because this might be their second or even first wipe. Well don’t worry, we all must go through this at least once, and it’s better to get out of the way sooner rather than later.

What Makes a "Good" Tarkov Player?
If I were to ask you the question, what makes a “good” Tarkov player, you’d probably have a handful of different game qualities pop up in your mind that you’d answer with. Of course, this question and the whole concept is very much subjective. For a game like Tarkov, there is no single right answer. So, pretty much it boils down to what you value as a Tarkov player when you are either in or out of raids. Some people focus and value strictly on their ability to fight AI and other players. Others will want to know how to maximize their potential in raid profits as much as possible. And the rest probably just go with the flow and feel out the raids for what they might be worth. And while I’m very eager to hear what people’s comments on this topic will be, so please leave your thoughts down below and subscribe if you enjoy this topic, personally, I have some of my own values that, individually don’t mean too much, but when combined, come together to show off knowledge, skill, and of course, game enjoyment.

Reflecting On Why I Always Come Back to Tarkov
In this day and age of videogames, where they feel more disposable than they ever have. Largely due to poor conditions upon release, atrocious live service monetization schemes, and other contributing factors, a lot of games in 2023 (at least games from larger publishers) feel rushed, incomplete, and devoid of any real soul. They just feel more like products to produce all the money and then some. Which is why so many of us are resorting to playing older titles from generations ago, or just replaying the games that are currently out, whether we still enjoy them or not. However, at the very least for myself personally, I have been consistently coming back to Tarkov time and time again. Even when there’s new games out that are solid and people are enjoying them, I guess Tarkov is just a comfort game to me. It’s hard to explain why Tarkov specifically is this game; I mean I casually play all the Soul’s games every now and again because they are all still amazing, but in terms of online games that are out there currently, Tarkov is still my number one. So, I figured it made sense to take some time and reflect on why this might be the case and go over some of the larger aspects of BSG’s game that make it not only so compelling, but also replayable. No matter what state it’s currently in.

Shotguns Might Become Insane in December's Patch
This may be a little early to talk about the changes that are coming in December. I mean we haven’t even gotten the wipe that is supposed to be in August. So, it definitely is early, but that isn’t going to stop me from having this conversation. On the last Tarkov TV podcast that was streamed a couple weeks ago, Nikita showed off the changes that are coming ot only this month, but down the road at the end of the year. It’s the first time we’ve ever had this much of a heads up for upcoming content, features, and changes. And probably the two biggest changes that are coming in December are the recoil changes, which we will be talking about in a future video, so subscribe if you want to see that video. And the armor hitbox changes for all the armors in the game. This is something that a lot of people know is a big deal, but others don’t know how massive of a game change this will be. Alongside inertia, the hitbox changes might be the single largest shake up to Tarkov we have ever seen in the game’s history thus far. And there is one category of weapon that might stand supreme at the end of it.

This Attachment Interaction is Incredibly Interesting
One thing I have always loved about Tarkov’s intrinsically complex weapon modding system, is how sometimes you can discover interesting interactions between certain attachments. Whether it is intentional or not. Many years ago, there was a bug where you could attach both a PSO and a REAP-IR thermal to an AK and have the thermal optic come out of the PSO. Which was interesting, but not very practical because you needed a thermal in order to do this trick. And it was quickly patched out once it was discovered. Earlier this wipe we had bugged M4’s that could attach both the jailbreak attachment as well as a suppressor for disgustingly low recoil. And while the ability to put both attachments on has been removed, there are some of those M4’s floating around in the world of Tarkov, even to this day. So, coming across one is like coming across a little time capsule of something once lost. But recently, by complete accident, I learned a fun little interaction between the PSO scopes for the AKs and the upgradable yellow iron sight attachments in the game. This isn’t going to be a long one, but let’s go over it quickly.

The Eternal Challenge of the Solo Player in Tarkov
Depending on how many people you decide to run with in Tarkov, your results are going to be significantly different. A 5-man squad, stomping around the maps of Tarkov can be a dominating presence no matter where you go, but that comes with its positive and negative aspects. On the flipside, running Tarkov by yourself can also create interesting problems that need to be solved, while also delivering a comprehensive challenge to those who wish to take it on. No matter how you decide to load into a raid, we have all, at one point, played this game solo. And no matter how good you are at the game, playing by yourself will always be a challenge. An exciting, and interesting one. But a challenge, nonetheless.

The Latest TarkovTV Podcast was Massive, Except...
If you’re a fan of Tarkov and have been waiting to see the new stuff that is up and coming with the game, well then, you’re probably eating really good right now. This Wednesday, we just got a huge TarkovTV podcast with Nikita, going over tons of new features and content for Tarkov, and it’s all coming a lot sooner than at least I anticipated. New guns, mechanics, Streets expansion; there was a lot packed into this one stream. And it was all juicy goodness, with one exception. But we’ll talk about that at the end.

Tarkov is the Most Fun with Bad Guns; Here's Why
Occasionally, I like to take a break from using all the insanely good weapons and do something dumb in Tarkov. Whether that’s a silly challenge or handicap I place on myself, or just using a weapon that isn’t popular by any means. Little things like this are how I stay interested in Tarkov when we are this deep into a single wipe cycle. And one weapon I have been using for the last few days has been honestly super fun to use, even if it’s incredibly challenging sometimes. The MP-18; Tarkov’s break action rifle. Technically, it falls under the shotgun category of weapons (for some reason), but it really should be in its own class. Regardless, this weapon has been a blast to use the last few times I have logged onto Tarkov. When looking at its stats, it doesn’t do anything spectacular, below average ergonomics, higher than average recoil when fired, and you only get to shoot once before you need to reload. And the MOA on it isn’t that good either, at 3.16. Meaning, there’s a chance you will miss your shot even if you are dead accurate with your sights. There isn’t much that can be done to the weapon either. You can swap out the wood furniture for a polymer handguard and buttstock. And you can fit an optic onto the weapon. Now, your bad weapon of choice doesn’t have to be the MP-18; it can be any weapon that isn’t considered good in the eyes of most. But Tarkov’s bad weapons are sometimes the most fun way to engage with the game, especially this late into a wipe.

The New Player Experience in Tarkov is Brutal in 2023
It’ll be six years since I have been playing Escape From Tarkov this coming September. That’s a long time to be playing one game. A few others that come to mind in terms of this amount of time playing one game are League of Legends, and For Honor. Although, for the latter, not so much anymore. I still have fond memories of my time with old Tarkov; what the UI looked like, how alien everything was for me, and what I was really getting myself into. It was a whole different beast back then. Nowadays, the knowledge and experience I have accumulated throughout the years has led to many more positive experiences with the game, despite all the things that have been and currently still are wrong with the game. I remember being new to Tarkov; what that felt like. Not knowing what is going on at all. What it really meant to die and lose your stuff, how the medical systems worked, the layouts of the maps; I was completely overwhelmed with the game. But I was entranced by the guns, how modifiable they were. Especially with what I was seeing online from other players, I wanted to be a part of that as well. Hell, I’ve mentioned this before, but I thought the suppressed TT was the coolest gun in the entire game for a while. Then it was the MPX, and then finally the M4. Crazy how far things have come. But... that was 2017. The game was drastically different back then. Now in 2023, I can’t imagine what it’s like being a new player to Escape From Tarkov. But I can only guess that it is very brutal.

Tarkov's Largest Backpacks Should Work Like This
One mechanic in Tarkov that we all seem to have forgotten about, mainly because it’s so second nature at this point, is what kind of storage we want to take into a raid with us. And that comes in the form of backpacks. They are the cornerstone to what you can carry out of raids. Years ago, there weren’t that many different backpacks available in the game to use. Nowadays in 2023, there are a whole host of different backpack options. Some are just reskins of already existing sizes, but for the most part, each backpack is unique enough to warrant having in the game. However, one thing BSG has been doing with some packs, is creating different internal dimensions in backpacks; forcing the player to adjust what they are able to carry on them. The “Paratus” backpack is the oldest example of the internals of a backpack not just being one large space for storage. It has different grid sizes inside, and over the years, BSG has added more backpacks that follow this rule of having different grid sizes in the packs. Which should become the new standard for most large backpacks going forward. Emphasis on large.

Tarkov Has A Suppressor Problem
Suppressors are strong in Tarkov. I mean, really, really strong. Well, at least on the weapons that benefit them. Because unfortunately, like weapons in this game, attachments suffer the same fate that they are all not created equal. Some parts are just outright better than others for certain roles. You want better ergonomics on a DMR? Run this. You want lower recoil and don’t mind being loud with something like an AK? Use these. But when it comes to making your weapon quiet, removing muzzle flash, and having that “tacticool” option available, some guns do it better than others. And this has only become more exacerbated by the many different nerfs to suppressors over the years; making their ergonomic penalties much more felt when being used. Even after all the changes they’ve gone through, some weapons just perform better because their suppressor options are not only more flexible, but also don’t harm the weapon nearly as much as others. So, we’re going go over some of the issues that Tarkov has with suppressors. And maybe some potential ideas to remedy this divide between calibers.

It's Okay to Make Mistakes; Both in and Out of Tarkov
One of the unfortunate aspects to playing Tarkov, that we all end up having to experience eventually, is making mistakes and feeling the consequences of those mistakes. With how complex Tarkov is and the lightning-fast decisions you will be making, especially should you get into a fight with someone, it only makes sense that you won’t always choose correctly. And in those moments, Tarkov will remind you that mistakes hurt. A lot. Death in Tarkov while painless for many players, still stings for those who may not have the experience or knowledge to know what they did wrong, or have the funds in game allowing them to bounce back relatively unscathed. But every so often, we all have one of those moments where we just choose completely wrong, make a huge mistake and we feel the ramifications of it for a while, even after we close the game. I know I’m guilty of this myself. I’ve had many deaths that linger with me even a day or two after it happened. But this is just a gentle reminder that it’s okay to make mistakes. Both in Tarkov, and especially outside of the game. More on that at the end.
