Sparrow on a Plank Chapter 8: A Sparrow on the Altar
Rick smiled at Wastch. The cabin boy was cute and knew it, worse, he had been away from any form of civilization for far too long. This meant that he may as well have been half octopus: The barmaids were doing their best to avoid the teenager, but no matter which way the barmaid approached him his hand ended up on her buttocks. Although his attention had been sort of fun earlier, as the evening grew older and he grew drunker, the attention became less fun. It had hit the point where the tavern keeper's apprentice was serving him, and even he was starting to get worried; the kid had been too long at sea.

Samuels looked intimidating in his muscle shirt while Lieutenant Prowse looked ready to go. Douglas and Walker were definitely ready for the experience while Kev was amused.

The temple was dark. Not just dark in the sense that they couldn't see, but dark in the sense that even with Hajime's summoned ball of light they had problems seeing what was in the inner sanctum. Hajime thought that it may have been because of some sorcerous darkness, but then he just realized it was because of the walls painted black and the dust in the air. The next few days went fast. Hajime kept up his meditation-exercise-crow's-nest-sleep routine, and Sal and Rick began fencing in earnest. She kept to her wooden sword and improvised one for Rick. After a night or two, Hajime was sleeping alone in his berth and the pair started going to bed earlier each night. Late morning sunlight streamed into the room. Paul stretched, almost hitting Bruno. He smiled, happy that he had taken the day off and, better yet, had convinced Bruno to play hooky as well. He lifted the blanket the two shared, appreciative that Bruno was as trim as he was in his Corsair days; he'd bet a million dollars that Bruno could still defeat a swarm of crazed swordsmen even today. He got up, deliberately keeping himself to "normal" speeds, and walked to the kitchen.
