Vibe Check
Autumn is finally vibing here in the North Georgia mountains, and it's got me thinking about Kalibayan's vibe. This time of year tends to spark a sense of wanderlust in me. I booked a flight to the Philippines next year. I haven't been back in almost two decades. I'm excited to see the motherland, ask all the questions, and hunt down some lore. Get those monster stories from the source!

Raymond. Runner-Up in Maps of the Self Challenge.
1. In the dream, you are stuck in a hotel, waiting as you had waited in all those jail cells. The hotel has greying patterned carpet, peeling paint, and wallpaper. Obtuse scenes of birds of paradise or Bo Peeps with their cunning sheep. You polish white sneakers with an old toothbrush and line them up neatly underneath the bed.

Meet the Manananggal
The whole journey into Kalibayan really began with me reminiscing about a particular monster my family used to tell me about when I was growing up in the Philippines. My family had ZERO qualms about scaring the shit out of the children in the family, no matter the age. I don’t remember the exact age the scary stories started, but they’re among some of my earliest memories. I immigrated to America when I was 5 years old and returned for a visit when I was 7, so that should give you some idea of how young I was when I first started hearing ghost stories.

Writing this novel is just free CBT
I think what’s going on is that I’m scared to write my main characters. Even think about them…maybe? I mean, I did a lot of thinking on them when I first ran headlong, maybe foolishly, into this endeavor. And now, honestly, I feel like they’ve turned into these feral little raccoons that I’m keeping at bay with a stick in this little corner of my mind.
