A shopping list can represent balancing our wants, needs, and dreams, despite its seemingly basic nature. This poem is a humorous meditation on my own daily choices, laced with comedy and honesty.
I hope you see a little of yourself in there.
The poem: "The Shopping List"
In my own land, we lack nothing.
We buy anything wealth can deliver.
When coins and cash allow for throw.
Today, I will write on the list:
Meat —
I gladly eat!
pig,
beef,
fish,
chick,
lamb
The wilder kinds not quite as frequently,
My gentle tongue must
I find it brutal and very raw.
To shoot a bullet through a beautiful doe,
Just having her grace my plate—
No thanks, I'll close that gate.
Call it double moral, if you dare.
However, I'm not quite there with only plants.
Still, I've made a couple swaps.
For the sake of the planet—and to improve health—
A new way appeared on my plate.
Thus, today, the List must include:
Oat milk—chocolate, if you care.
Plantgurt topped with blueberries
And Naturli spread—that delicious dairy!
(Yes, Danish products directly from the land,
I'm pleased to buy what nature intended.
Bread must also find its place.
I can't subsist on porridge — hell!
But gluten tends to make me ache.
So, rye and seeds—just swallow and take!
We humans, too, must drink.
Coffee is stocked, therefore there's no need, I believe.
But the summer sun paints hot cheeks.
So, something chilly is what one seeks.
The list includes some juice, drink,
Life must be lived—no holds barred!
A wicked whisper enters my core:
A cake! — the tempter at my door.
That small voice saying, "Give in!"
"You've earned it, friend — just feed your sin!"
So, on the list: a cake or two.
Of course, I could bake something new.
Knead my dough and prepare a treat.—
Flour,
sugar,
Baking Powder,
margarine,
