The Last Memory: Chapter 5
Did I just lose my freedom?
Chapter Five
Trenton walked down the stairs, feeling the air cool down around her as she got to the bottom. The basement was dark and there was only one light bulb on the ceiling to brighten everything up. Trenton scouted the room for the dryer, finding it in the far corner of the room. She opened the door, pulled the clothes out, and set them on top of the dryer.
"Crap!" she said as one of her shirts slipped off the edge of the dryer and onto the floor. Trenton reached down to grab it and noticed another shirt next to it, stained in blood. "What the heck?" Trenton asked putting her shirt back on the dryer and holding the other shirt up to the light. It wasn't something she expected to find and it sent chills down her spine when she thought about where it might have come from.
"Sorry about that," a voice said from behind her.
Trenton turned to see Pam looking at her. "I didn't see you there."
"Yeah, sorry again," Pam said. "I followed you down to make sure that you found everything alright. I didn’t expect you to find my shirt. I thought I had washed it."
"What happened?" Trenton asked, hoping the other woman had a good explanation for the blood stains.
"I had a bad bloody nose," Pam replied. "The air has been so dry lately that my nose has a mind of its own. I was in the middle of breakfast one day and all of a sudden my nose was bleeding. I was in a rush, so I must have just thrown my shirt down here and forgotten about it."
Trenton felt relieved. Her imagination was going wild thinking about all of the possibilities of how the blood had gotten on the shirt, and none of them were as simple as Pam's explanation. "Well, I don't know where you want me to set this," Trenton said, handing Pam the shirt. "But I should probably start getting dressed." Trenton picked her pile of clothes off the dryer and started heading up the stairs.
"I'll just set this here for now," Trenton heard Pam say from the bottom of the stairs. "And Trenton?" Pam called.
"Yes?" Trenton replied, stopping on the stairs.
"Did you need a ride into town? We are kind of on the outskirts, so I wasn't sure if you were planning on walking or what your plan was, but I have the day off today, so I don't mind taking you around."
Trenton thought about this for a moment. She had imagined going job hunting by herself, but the reality was that she didn't have her driver's license at the moment, and even if Pam had it, she hadn't driven a car since who knows when. "Yeah, I would appreciate the help," Trenton said.
"Alright then," Pam replied. "I should probably get ready as well."
The two made it up the stairs and went their separate ways. At this point, Trenton was feeling a bit overwhelmed. Would she ever be able to do things for herself, or would she always have to rely on someone else? She wanted so badly to be self-sufficient and make her own choices. However, at the moment, she felt like a prisoner in her own life. She wanted to remember her life. She wanted to have the peace of mind that came with having her own place and job. She wanted so badly to have her independence, but now was not the time to deny assistance. She needed help if she was going to get on her own feet, and it was nice that Pam was willing to step up to the plate.
