Comments are on Vacation, and Likes without comments are Blooming.
What is going on?
Ok. Its official. I am getting more and more annoyed.
I may not be the hottest ticket here, but I will have my say.
So lately I have noticed a general uptick in likes
Not just on my stories, but everywhere
On one creator's Top Story
I saw forty-one (41) likes and eight (8) comments
'Casper The Not So Friendly Ghost' liked your story
But fully 41 of us could not drop a comment
We were either too busy or your story does not deserve
a comment...or maybe we never read it at all
So how can we comment?
Maybe we don't think you important enough to deign, to consider bothering to leave a comment
Or
Is Vocal paying for likes now, maybe there is another
Leaderboard that only the Likers can see
Me...I only hit the Like button to identify which stories
I have already read. I make sure to comment.
Comments are what matters.
If I read your story and comment...
why would you only drop a like on mine, did you even read it
Do you expect a response
Should I then go and Vocal Google your name to find you
....
Replies too, I am way behind on mine...confessing
Before someone points out my hypocrisy on late replies
ALSO
Cache is playing havoc with the comments
Comments seem to go on a long vacation before turning up
Which is one reason for my late replies
I can't find them.
So, at least I have an excuse for late returning of replies
to comments...so sorry for my tardiness.
....
Do Likes pay people their ha'penny I wonder. Only if you actually read the story. The way I see it, if you actually read a story, you would take the time to drop a few words to acknowledge such. Just because you are no longer getting paid, you can still be supportive.
I mean, those 41 likes would still add up to a few pennies. Right? Assuming the liking people are actually reading before liking.
And another thing....I see people subscribing without any indication that they have even read a story of the authors subscribed to.
Such and such subscribed to you. Why, pray tell. What impressed you enough to make you subscribe. You didn't even read a Haiku and comment, as far as I can see. I mean, it is short enough.
Such strange happenings.
If you continuously only drop a like, I am no longer reading your stories. It is only fair.
If anyone cares!

Personally, I have a policy where I don’t like unless I also comment. It just seems to be common courtesy to do both, but I know that some people are busy, are using the like button in place of the bookmark button, etc. it does annoy me a bit when someone likes but doesn’t comment, but at the same time, it makes me feel as though it’s better than nothing if that’s really all they have the time to do after reading—if they did read it.
I always wonder if a like meant they actually read it. And comments let you know what they liked/disliked about it. As far a regulars to our pages, I know some of them just want to let us know they read it but may not have had time to comment. And there are those same ones who may disagree but are liking it just to say “good for us for sharing an opinion” Whatever the reasons, I still wonder, haha. I can’t help it so I know what you mean. I try my best to make my rounds, and sometimes the title grabs my attention right away, like this story. Vocal is far from perfect, but I still like it here. Hopefully more changes to better our experience are on the horizon. 💖
I drop likes and I read, but when it comes to comments, I do comment, but sometimes I don't know what to say. Dropping a like is my way of saying I read your story, and I read them thoroughly even when I can't find the words to say what I want to say.
Which piece was it that had 41 likes but only 8 comments?
I am a reader/writer that leaves likes and comments on what I read. I to have noticed that I get comments and when I go see what it says there is no comment till two days later. Great job in expressing your views.
There does seem to be a trend of conspicuously copious writers who never return reads as well.
You see, I sometimes drop a like. That's because I liked it. However, I may not gave anything further to say. Maybe someone on the comments' thread has already said what I wanted to say more succinctly or more eloquently than I could ever say it. Sometimes I get interrupted and forget to come back. Sometimes it resonated and it's simply because I liked it. I don't know. I have people who I know genuinely like my work. They don't always leave a comment. And for me, that's okay.
Ahoy lovely Antoni! It’s true, this does happen. Although, for myself, if I’m gassed and have nothing left in my tank, I leave a like to say that a poem gave me a little gift when I am depleted. I might not have the words to articulate that in the moment, but the work is always appreciated. ☺️
I’m not sure Antoni. People who subscribe without reading usually are just trying to build their base without “giving” anything. It happens 50 times more on Medium. As for the likes and no comments, sometimes people are on the go, sometimes others like and come back later to comment, but sometimes not. Have to take the good with the bad unfortunately but I know it is frustrating at times. 😊
I totally agree. I find it annoying too. I read some long stories and comment, and the person either ignores me, or just drops a like on one of my stories. Fair is fair. Read, support and comment. Everyone wants their ha'penny. 😒🤗❤️😍
I’m with you Antoni. I think it has a lot to do with the leaderboard. I’ve been saying right from the very beginning that this current leaderboard eventually is going to end up worse than the previous leaderboard. Because this leaderboard is very easy to game. I am noticing people that people are clicking the heart maybe thinking that we won’t notice that they have not commented OK. So that way I guess in their mind they’re thinking that we will go over there and like one of their stories and comment on it. Basically if you get less comments that will give me a better chance to get on the leaderboard. Another thing I’m noticing is some people instead of commenting on your most current stories or poems of the week that could potentially get you onto the leaderboard they’re commenting on stories from the week before or even two weeks ago. My rule of the thumb is I am always going to comment on the most recent stories of the people that I subscribe to. Even if I missed a week or two of reading, because every so often you gotta take a break it’s a lot of work doing all this reading and commenting. But when I come back instead of reading the stories that I missed from two weeks ago I go straight to the newer stories and comment on them And then if I can catch up on the newer stories then I’ll go back and read the older stories that I missed. But I am always going to read your newest stories first because that helps you get onto the leaderboard. I try to give people a chance and I will read some of their stories - maybe two or three over a span of two or three weeks, but if the favor is not returned then I will stop reading their stories. I don’t like being that way. But I’m supporting you, you could at least support me back. It takes time for me to support you. So if you’re not gonna support me then I would rather put the priority onto those that are supporting me. So those that support me are always going to come first on my list of reading than those that do not support me. So I get where you’re coming from because I do see it happening. And I may be wrong but I think it has to do with the leaderboard. It’s too easy to game this current leaderboard.
