With people being wary of the Pandemic and the economies across the globe slowly opening up, more and more people have now resumed travelling to various domestic and international destinations. But, the Pandemic has changed the way people are now travelling today. Let’s delve into the different trends shaping the future of travelling in 2022/23 and beyond.

1. Short-distance trips

People are now opting for destinations closer to home or place within the same region. People don’t want to be stuck in a place far off from home in case a lockdown with immediate effect comes into force. In India, a similar predicament arose in March 2020 when a Covid-induced lockdown was announced and people were given just a few hours to scurry to their home bases. Moreover, travel restrictions and protocols in different countries pertaining to quarantine and testing requirements are forcing people to opt for comparatively closer destinations. Hence long weekends are now being utilized to travel to short-haul destinations which are about 3 to 4 hours from home.

2. Staycations

Building upon the above trend, many folks are now opting to stay in hotels or resorts within the city. For most people living in metros or big cities where both partners lead busy lives, travelling in itself can be quite exhausting. So, on the contrary, where travelling is meant to relax and rejuvenate people, sometimes tends to exacerbate feelings of burnout. Hence, more and more people, especially couples are opting for staycations within the city limits so that they can simply relax and catch up on the much-needed rest and relaxation. In fact, many luxury and boutique hotels and resorts are now offering staycation options ranging from a weekend package to even for a few hours through the day. One can spend the day savoring the food, getting a relaxing massage at one of the spas or simply soaking in the swimming pool all day long.

3. Workcations

The Pandemic has forced many workplaces to adopt the remote mode of working. This flexibility to work from any corner of the world has led to the rise of ‘workcations’ a concept that many travel-based firms are tapping into. Various homestays or Airbnb rentals are now offering lucrative workcation deals.

People are now looking at long-stay options having good internet connectivity at several scenic leisure destinations. So, now you can satiate the nomad in you without compromising on your career goals. So, folks, work while you are relaxing on a beach or while you sip on your cup of hot chocolate while enjoying spectacular mountain views.

4. Yoga holidays

Well, what if we told you that you can mix leisure with learning the finer nuances of yoga? Yoga and travel can be effectively combined to create memories besides lifelong learnings. Many people especially from the UK and the US travel to India in search of spiritual knowledge. Being the birthplace of yoga, India has the largest number of yoga retreats in the world and accounts for 23% of the global market share related to yoga tourism. Although global tourists are also looking elsewhere besides India for a yoga holiday, the regional and domestic trend of yoga holidays is set to rise in the coming years.

So, if you are an avid yoga practitioner and want to undergo a yoga teacher training program, then head to Kerala, a southern state in India. Besides, Kerala aka ‘God’s own country offers the perfect backdrop for a leisurely yoga sojourn. Also, Kerala is home to renowned yoga retreats that offer some of the best yoga certificate courses in Kerala. You can opt for either the beginner level 200 hours ttc Kerala or the more advanced 300 hours ttc Kerala for more profound yoga knowledge.

5. Sustainable travel

The Pandemic has nudged many people to be cautious about nature and its sustainability in the long run. Many travellers are now exploring options where they can be involved in the preservation of tourist-friendly places. Hence, eco-friendly vacations, community tourism and taking trips that help lower carbon footfall are seeing a rise. For instance, travel searches by people in the US to eco paradises like Costa Rica have risen by a whopping 234% each year. Moreover, carbon-neutral Iceland is gaining an increasing number of visitors each year and this trend is only going to see an upward tick in 2023 and the subsequent years.

6. Booking more homestays

The Pandemic has made most of us wary of crowded places. So, although travel is picking up in this post Pandemic era, more and more travellers now prefer to stay in private accommodations of homestays. Homestays are not only easy on the pocket, but they allow for safer travel by staying at comparatively smaller places with minimal contact with other people.

7. Caravan trips

Caravan travelling is popular in places like the US and the UK. However, when people want to travel safely due to the ongoing Pandemic, then taking caravan trips can be an ideal option. In fact, as per report. It was estimated that about 60% of people intending to take up travelling in 2021 would have taken road trips in their own private vehicles. This naturally pegged the demand for caravans which offer a safe haven on road journeys. Since road trips and camping are here to stay, more people especially in the United States are likely to make caravan trips in future.

8. Travelling in large groups

The Pandemic induced lockdowns and the ensuing misery has made almost everyone crave personal interactions. Hence, people are now travelling in large groups consisting of close relatives and friends to domestic and international destinations. Also, travelling in large groups creates a safety bubble and hence such ‘friendcations’ are seeing an upward trend in 2022/23.

You’re Takeaway!

The ongoing Pandemic has entirely changed the way people look at travel today. The Covid-19 virus has also changed the way we now perceive life in general. While some of us believe that the future is indeed uncertain and want to promptly travel to the places on our bucket list for the ‘savoring the now’ experience, many others still want to tread cautiously and travel with precautions. The aforementioned trends and many other related drifts will shape the way how the global travel industry functions in near future.
