While You Were Out...
Poem for S.
A little background info...
I wrote this while staying with a friend in a guest house in Japan, and came up with the idea for it because of a girl (why else would I write a poem?).
So, this is again one of my experiments from long ago...
I think it still works:
After last night (the boast –
remember?
“I could write a poem about you”)
I have tried to find the
time for this. Listening
to this pencil on paper, the shower,
the washer, the radio,
my feet on the floor,
nervous. But something
is less successful
here. When I write,
not with peace and quiet,
I try to catch it all
and never lie about
experience. If I keep
this at one rhythm,
one idea, I will lie
and say that your voice
does not move me
or that talking
with you was real and
the comfort of my
long stay here, near
the rice paddies, the
mountains, streams,
all this in nature;
not your smile, my hopes
and thoughts of you
while you were out.
