we carried hope out in paper bags

unscrewed the crib, boxed up onesies

abandoned pink bunnies and

baby blue giraffes and

held our tongues and our

breath—and closed our

selves off from

endless

grief

Ah! This is so sweet! I've always wanted children and that's off the table for me. (I'm 64). But I've experienced loss. I can feel the grief here. And the brevity of your poem just adds to its potency. Many Blessings to You and Yours. ⚡️💙 Bill⚡️

Felt so deeply... Those who know...KNOW. A capture of indescribable moments and you wrote all in between them. *Head bowed*

Wow! This just grabs you by the soul.

  • I can relate to this very much. It reminds me of that sinking feeling that I felt after losing my baby. I think many parents who have lost babies will be able to relate. I love how you have described the sadness that accompanies such loss in your poem. I particularly love the line 'abandoned pink bunnies' because that line reveals the heartbreak of loss and how we close ourselves in because of the overwhelming grief it brings with it. This is beautiful, sad and a tearjerker. I stand with you.

  • Oh, Christy, this is so raw, I could feel the pain that has no outlet except to take one step away, and then another, knowing it will never be the same. Beautifully done, and if it is your experience, my heart goes out to you. What I especially appreciated is the couple closed themselves off together. Often it is too much for one partner and they leave, but that glimmer of togetherness you gave us made this stand out even more!! Excellent work, my friend!

  • As someone without a maternal bone in her body, I always have trouble with these kinda circumstances but death, in any form is always devastating. Loved your Nonet!

Devastation of the highest order! This is so well written and absolutely heartbreaking. The imagery in the first half is so powerful and then the emotional distress and overwhelming despair captured in the second half just ripped me apart

This is absolutely heartbreaking, Christy. The hardest grief of them all. Beautifully and sensitively written!

The one unbearable grief. The one you never get over. The paper bags follow you. Powerful nonet, Christy.

  • Well-wrought! So many layers in such a compact piece!
