The Nuisance Innovations

The leaf blower noise and fumes made us cancel our morning walk

After breakfast,

refreshing morning walk

is our daily ritual.

We were about to go,

something felt off,

did not feel right.

it was the leaf blower,

the gas-powered noisy device,

used by the crew,

for cleaning the neighborhood.

I was battling

whether to go or not,

the pros and cons,

yes necessary,

when you live among threat.

The above tolerance

jarring decibel sounds,

is not it, auditory abuse?

But then the fumes

hit my nostrils.

Imagine an immune system

built in the woodland,

trained to inhale fresh air,

facing this modern horror.

Fossil fuel exhaust,

it will press danger,

Stress metabolites will rush

like soldiers to a war zone,

hormones will be disturbed.

I can’t afford that,

blood pressure already high.

Little son is ready,

with jacket and shoes on,

and toy car too.

I feel bad to disappoint,

but I had to tell,

Son, walk is good.

Sun is vitamin.

Birdsong rejuvenates.

Fresh air is necessity.

But this noise and fumes,

we can’t handle,

so, let’s postpone,

stay safe at home."

We will go when

favorable conditions return.

I feel like a fool.

With a huge mortgage

this is what we get.

All lost in translation,

the perils are real,

the reckless human innovation,

needs serious revision.

Note: The noise is a mechanical irritant, and the fumes are a chemical irritant. Both assault the body. Let’s be aware of the dangers of the modern life.

The smell of gas bothers me. It gives me a headache. Add in the decibels of loud machinery, and I'd have to agree with you, I'd want to stay inside too.

Totally agree with you on this one Seema. Who wants to hear or smell a blower that early in the morning. Hope you two got to go out after the work was done. Good job.

  • I can smell it. Yuck. I used to wake up at 4 AM AND GO JOGGING. in los angeles. Strange to see almost no cars on the freeway, But it was the best time to run and feel the open air. HUGS
