Author's Note: Poem a Day in February (PaDiF) is fun for everyone who joins in. There are prizes for placing like pictured above, their are booklets that have your poems in.

I write poetry every day on PaDiF for fun and for encouragement. I am not entered in most of the contests. This year two regulars stepped up and donated prizes and agreed to be my partner in this endeavor.

We will get a new writer on occasion. I have fun with the regulars all year long as we have one day a month where we rhyme.

Below, please find three poems of the five that placed:

Jennifer Sawatzky—First Place

Eating soup with a fork!

Chicken, beef, even pork…

The soup slips through the edges,

With chunks catching on the ledges!

My dear son, why don’t you use a spoon!?

“The soup will taste funny, it will ruin.”

I try to explain how crazy this seems,

Staring up innocently, his eyes gleam

What can I do beside let it happen,

Soup on the table, the floor, even the napkin…

Oh well, he’s eating and happy,

Even if the floor ends up sticky and sappy!!

Eating soup with a fork,

Seems a lil weird, maybe a dork?

But how unique and different it really is,

How you eat soup is none of their biz!!!

Pin The Name On The Donkey

I have two donkeys, mother and son.

They’re pretty sweet and like to have fun.

The donkey is a domesticated equine,

Some are stout, some are fine.

They originate in Africa, known there as an ass.

They often have quite a bit of sass.

I’m considering a naming contest, the two of them and me,

I’m not yet certain what the prizes will be.

Perhaps it’ll be matching, make it easier for you:

Match the name to the image; you won’t need a clue.

“Smart ass”, “dumb ass”, and “nice ass” –

Those are the options you’ll assess.

Upon further thought, this whole thing could go south.

I’m not so sure I want any of those names spilling out of my mouth.

Further complicated the matter is donkey nomenclature,

“Jack” or “Jackass” is what you call a male donkey who is mature.

Here’s where it gets messy, what the adult females get called.

“Jenny” or “Jennet” – I’m not kidding, but rather appalled.

Am I named after a donkey or a donkey after me?

Either way, it seems I can’t let this be.

In some regions, donkeys are referred to as burros.

We all know a story where the donkey is a hero.

Back to my contest, maybe I’ll recuse myself.

I’ll fade out of sight like an elf on a shelf.

You decide which ass is smart, nice, or dumb.

I’ll announce the winner with a beat of the drum.

Meanwhile, I’ll haul my keister out of this chair and beyond the fireplace,

I’ve got to feed those asses, whether smart, dumb, or nice!

The 2nd Annual Bird Dance Off

Bettina the buzzard saw the post online

2nd Annual Bird Dance Off, prizes so fine

She called her friend Gertie, who said, “okay

You know I could dance night and day!”

They practiced the rhumba, waltz, and more

The big day came, and they danced out the door

Down by the river, in the old red barn

They danced until their feet were nearly worn

One by one, they outlasted all the dancers

except for the aptly named, The Sisters Prancer

They Polkaed, Schottisched, and did the Turkey Trot

The Prancer Sisters asked, “Is that all you’ve got?”

Mashed Potato, Samba, Quadrille, and the Charleston

They were getting tired, but they still weren’t done,

Lindy, Jive, Twist, Stroll, Hand Jive, and Watusi

They even attempted to do the Hoochie Koochie

They outlasted the sisters and had won the prize

Which was two orders of hamburgers with fries
