She gazed into the firepit flame

As it grew ever brighter

She would never be the same

As the fire continued up higher and higher

Inside were the memories of her last few years

Her diary was completely consumed

Happiness, sadness. love and tears

Gone up in smoke, and she felt doomed

Violated by her grandmother

Who had read what was inside

She would not let that happen with another

As she shook her head and cried

Private thoughts were now well known

Her secrets had been exposed

Feeling betrayed and all alone

"I'll never write again," she supposed

The smell of the burning embers

The smoke rising from the ground

She hoped she would remember

What once was written down

As the flame began to lower

Her tears continued to flow

Such an invasion of privacy

Her heart was heavy with sadness

Why read someone else's diary

Surely this was all madness

As the final flames died

Her life changed forever that day

With the pain of wounded pride

She turned and walked away
