Life isn’t always what it seems
Sometimes a hero is really a villain
And sometimes a villain
Is really a hero
~
Nobody truly knows
What we wear behind our masks
~
A laugh can hide a cry
A smile can hide a monster
It’s the ones we love
Who bring us to our knees
~
We are all phantoms of our own operas
Hiding our scars behind our masks
~
Lies can dig graves
In our minds
Secrets can keep truths
From our lips
~
Betrayal is a friend
Who hugs with a knife
~
Pray for the days
That bring our world
Down to ruin, days
When there's nothing left to lose
~
Life is never more honest
Then, when we fall
~
Looks aren't always how they appear
Sometimes beauty is only skin deep
And sometimes beauty
Is buried deep
~
What's behind our masks, you ask
Strangers you haven’t met

I appreciate how this poem doesn’t rush toward resolution. It allows contradiction to exist, hero and villain, beauty and ruin, all at once. That honesty feels earned.
What you say about masks is so true.
Amazing poem & great take on the challenge! I especially liked: “Looks aren't always how they appear Sometimes beauty is only skin deep And sometimes beauty Is buried deep”💖
"Betrayal is a friend Who hugs with a knife" "We are all phantoms of our own operas" These lines were absolutely brilliant! Loved your poem!
The imagery and rhythm give it such a haunting truth. That last line really lingers.
Oh, so many masks!! Great entry, Will!
Oh, wonderfully said...still invisible, I see. Mystery is a magical thing. Loved the very wise words.
Awesome work, I hope this win 🏆
Cleverly written. There is much truth in: “ Sometimes a hero is really a villain. And sometimes a villain is really a hero.” - the truth always prevails despite the masks people wear.
Love this! Fark, and truth-biting.🖤 Masks aren’t just what we hide, but what the world expects us to wear. Powerful.
Lies digging graves hugs with a knife lips glossed with secrets. This is wonderful ❤️ your writing never disappoints
We're all strangers behind a mask until we choose to reveal our true self, sometimes we grow so attached to the mask we fear who we truly are beneath it.
