Laments of an Avocado
I Was Not Picked

I tried to be the best on the tree
Adorned in my best green outfit
I applied skin smoother
To get rid of blemishes and discoloration
And hoped to be picked
****
Competing with my siblings
I maintained a uniform distance between pips
A symmetrical body
And just the right weight
To be picked
****
Last season, my sister was too big
She was not picked
The year before, my cousin matured
But remained small in stature
He was not picked
****
This time, I was the right size, color, and shape
I was picked
****
At the store, I sat with others on display
Customers came and examined us
Some were gentle; others pressed and pinched us
I waited in vain to be picked
****
In the end, I became overripe
No one wanted me anymore
I was now picked for the compost pit
****
On reincarnation, I will try another line
I will come back as the best-looking orange
And hope to be picked
****
