How It Becomes You

(an honest look at looking)

How It Becomes You

You pretend that you’re not looking

(the first time)

Then you see she’s holding a heavy book

in her hands and you wonder what

it is so you start to stare again

(the second time)

But then she looks up from her book

and, seeing you, smiles and goes back

to what she’s reading

Maybe you also have a book, but

you only pretend to read it now

as she turns and searches on another page

(always smiling)

and looks up again

(you have been on page 173 for three minutes now)

(no one is that slow)

You try to smile and

put your elbow into your food

(she sees this and her laugh

animates her smile)

You really don't mind

It becomes you
