Fever Dream
A poem about my recurring childhood fever dream
By Heather FosterPublished 3 years ago • 1 min read
My fevered heart pulses
With each beat it shakes the walls of the world I’ve created in my sleep
The scenery shifts without reason
Sound rhythmically pounds in my ears
Logic and meaning do not exist here
People I don’t know in a place that I do
I am haunted by their faces and I long for my mother
I’m disoriented in this familiar space
A new sound rings out that jerks my core
Sweat breaks on my brow
I have been here before
I dread that I will visit again
But for now, I awake
