I asked you a question, down on one knee,

"How 'bout it baby, will you marry me?"

You walked down the aisle,

I watched your mother cry,

I said I do, now I'm wondering;

Do I?

***

Did I know what was coming, way down the road?

Did I know about the tears, the trust I'd erode?

Did I know how hard it is just to try?

I said I do, now I'm wondering;

Do I?

***

It started out great, just like we'd planned,

A house in the suburbs and a ring on your hand,

Now I'm drinking alone,

Beneath a grey northern sky,

I said I do, now I'm wondering;

Do I?

***

Did I know that I couldn’t stay faithful to you?

Did I know what a mess I could turn things into?

Did I know that you can't build a life on a lie?

I said I do, now I'm wondering;

Do I?

***

Now the cries of this kid are piercing my ears

I've failed as a husband and father for years

When I come back from the bar

I can't look you in the eye

I said I do, now I'm wondering;

Do I?

***

Did I understand the words that I spoke?

Did I know how it felt to be tired and broke?

Did I know it ain't easy to be your perfect guy?

I said I do, now I'm wondering;

Do I?

***

Do I know what it takes to mend a broken pledge?

Do I have what it takes to step back from this edge?

I didn't take the time to kiss you goodbye

I thought I wanted out, now I'm wondering;

Do I?

    Woah - this is brilliantly done. The weight behind your words hit deep. I also love that while reading, you can so clearly hear a country type tune in the rhythm. Amazing work! Congratulations on an awesome Top Story!!

    I could see this as a country tune. Not enough mention of beer and trucks for it to totally fit the modern genre! Only messing with you, J.P. The picture that you create of his life and his regret at being too hasty is saddening but also makes me squirm a little for whoever he married.

  • Well written, congrats
