Actions Speak Louder

By Julie O'Hara - Author, Poet and Spiritual WarriorPublished about 10 hours ago 2 min read

Verse 1

When I asked her why she never said

“I love you” back to me,

Mama just stared through me with disgust

And whispered her decree.

“Actions speak louder than words,” she said,

Like a scripture carved in stone,

And I learned real young that silence

Can chill you to the bone.

Chorus

Actions spoke louder,

Louder than any lie,

Louder than the love she never gave

No matter how I’d try.

Actions spoke louder,

And the truth cut cold and clean—

If love was in her heart at all,

It never once was seen.

Verse 2

She never called me pretty,

Never said I had a mind,

Never reached for me in gentleness,

Never once was soft or kind.

No hand to hold on long walks home,

No arms to pull me near,

Just the echo of her footsteps

And the weight of growing fear.

Chorus

Actions spoke louder,

Louder than any lie,

Louder than the love she never gave

No matter how I’d try.

Actions spoke louder,

And the truth cut cold and clean—

If love was in her heart at all,

It never once was seen.

Verse 3

But the nights told the story

That her daylight tried to hide,

When she’d drag me from my blankets

With a fury wild‑eyed.

Slaps like thunder in a storm wind,

Fists like hail against my skin,

And the twisted joy that flickered

Every time she gave in to sin.

Bridge

Oh, the mountains hold their secrets,

And the holler keeps its ghosts,

But the cruelest truths are carried

By the ones we trust the most.

And the child inside remembers

What the grown one tries to mend—

That love should never look like this,

And pain is not a friend.

Final Chorus

Actions spoke louder,

Louder than any plea,

Louder than the child I was

Who begged silently.

Actions spoke louder,

And the truth was plain to see—

If nothing else, my mother

Was honest as could be.

Outro

For her creed was carved in darkness,

And she lived it to the bone—

“Actions speak louder than words,” she said,

And her actions

Stood alone.
