Sunset Rise

A photographic ode to the sunset

By Joe PattersonPublished about a year ago 3 min read

It might not look like anything special, but this photo is one of my favorite pictures that I’ve ever taken. Thanks to my mother and her mindset of having a healthy outdoor life. I like to go for walks, especially when it’s a clear sunny day out. I love to put on my favorite music and just go walking for hours. One day when I was out walking one spring evening this sunset stood over. And I’m not afraid to say I thought it was a beautiful thing.

In fact I think it’s one of the best things about life. The stillness, the tranquility and the sun that fades out as if it’s the light at the end of the tunnel. It all sits as a great display of life’s most precious moments. I remember the day I took this photo. I wasn’t just out taking a simple stroll through the neighborhood like always. This was a point in my life where I was just bouncing back from a difficult time. I had just got a new job and was working on getting back in school and I really felt so alive, like I hadn’t felt in a good while up to that moment.

I told myself this definitely calls for a good walk in the spring while listening to some Ice Cube as I took a stroll. This moment meant everything considering the year plus hard times I had just endured. As they say nowadays life really was just “life-ing” on me, but even though life was life, God was and still is God, so I made it out of those hard times of life, all thanks to him. So I’m out walking this day and I don’t remember what day it was exactly, though I’m fairly sure my social media feed could answer that question for me.

I just remember being out on that glorious old man walk that my closest loved ones like to pick on me for making and I stopped myself as I got ready to head back in the house and this sunset caught me eyes. Now this is gonna sound like a cliche line that you hear in a movie about adventure, but I gotta say it. When I saw this sunset I told myself “this isn’t just any sunset” this is a sunset that is ironically symbolizing the new sun rising in my life.

I had just survived the clouds and rain that was the storm of my life. It definitely wasn’t easier, especially when you consider how much I caused most of those problems myself, but I smartened myself up and pulled through. As a reward the skies cleared and the sun came out. With a new sun rising over my life better days had finally come and I was able to go to sleep at night with no stress and wake up in the morning knowing I was safe and blessed.

If you haven’t figured it out by now, I’m a big movie buff. What can I say? I’m a nerd and it plays a big role in influencing me as a writer. So when I stopped in that moment on that day looking at that sunset I felt like I was looking at the perfect cover art to the perfect movie that was the good times taking place in my life at that moment. This sunset was the conclusion go great day that was resting on a beautiful life of a boy who living in a newfound peace.

I took this picture knowing that after I took it I was gonna hold on to it for good. Because it wasn’t just a symbol of a beautiful evening, it was the symbol of the beauty of life and no matter how hard life may be sometimes, when you stay in faith and keep pushing forward, you’ll get a clear sunset rising over your life symbolizing that all is well.
