"Past the Storm"
A twenty-five-year-old boy named Arjun lived in a little community tucked away amid undulating hills. Arjun has no sight from birth. He lived in a dark world, yet his spirit never wavered. Most people would never comprehend the sensitivity with which he could hear the world. Children's laughing, the rustle of leaves, the distant sound of a river, and the voices of birds all served as his window to the outside world.
The father of Arjun was a poor farmer. Although Raghav, his father, cherished him, he was constantly concerned about how his son would do in such a visually stimulating world. He had made numerous attempts to convey to Arjun the beauty of the world, which he was unable to perceive for himself. "Papa, I do not need to see the world to understand it," Arjun would reply with a simple smile. In my heart, I sense it.
Arjun never let his blindness to define him, despite the constraints. By using his keen sense of touch and hearing, he was able to find his way around his community. He was familiar with every trail, tree, and stone in the village. More than anything, though, he yearned for the opportunity to travel outside the town and experience the outside world.
The village had never experienced a storm like this one before. The winds howled as if the ground itself were being ripped apart, and the sky darkened to a threatening gray. The storm's intensity appeared to be equal to the internal storms of doubt that Arjun had frequently experienced as he stood in the doorway of his little house. His dream had always been to travel across the hills and see what was on the other side of the storm. But he remained bound to the security of his town because of the terror and uncertainty of it all.
"What if I never see the outside world, Papa?" One evening, with a rare tenderness in his voice, Arjun questioned his father. "What if I am stranded here forever and the storm never ends?"
Raghav touched his son's shoulder tenderly. "Arjun, the storm will pass. And the sky will be clear when it does. But you have to keep in mind that the world you are looking for is more than what your eyes can see. You feel it with your courage and spirit. The storm that occasionally rages inside our hearts is nothing like the storm that exists outside. You must have faith that there is something lovely waiting for you beyond the storm.
Arjun considered what his father had said, but he was not sure whether he would ever have the courage to leave the security of his house. His misgivings increased with every instant as the storm continued to rage for days. Then, however, something occurred. The storm had started to pass, and in the ensuing silence, Arjun sensed a change within himself.
One evening, when the rain had subsided to a light drizzle and the winds had slowed, Arjun got to his feet with a renewed sense of resolution. He could not be imprisoned indefinitely. He needed to go outside. He needed to know what was on the other side of the storm.
With the approval of his father, Arjun embarked on his adventure. His initial steps were uncertain and unsteady, but as he moved, he discovered his rhythm. The dirt beneath his feet felt more solid, and the air was fresher than he had anticipated. He could sense the environment changing with each step—not with his eyes, but with his emotions. He paid attention to the sounds all about him, including the subtle hum of the adjacent river, the rustle of trees swinging in the breeze, and the call of faraway animals. He was being addressed by the world in a language he had long since mastered.
After several days, Arjun traveled far from his village. He encountered people who were gracious enough to give him advice, traversed rivers, and ascended hills. Arjun used his inner vision rather than his sight to find new things everywhere he went. He started to realize that vision was not just something that happened in the eyes. It was an emotion, a link to the outside world. And he saw the world in ways that others could never comprehend because of his boldness and tenacity.
Arjun eventually arrived at a large field with a clean, broad sky after a long, difficult trek. No more uncertainties or storms existed. He could only envision the colors of the sky as the sun was sinking. Arjun grinned inwardly. The storm had passed.
He saw that the storm had been the storm of his own worries and insecurities, not only the actual tempest he had feared. He had overcome the most powerful storm of all, the one that raged inside of him, by venturing into the unknown.
By feeling it with his soul rather than seeing it with his eyes, Arjun had discovered his place in the universe. He now realized that there is beauty, clarity, and serenity behind any tempest. And he could never lose that, no matter how strong the storm.
After navigating through the tempest, he saw the boundless potential of his own soul.
Arjun realized then that he was capable of conquering anything.
