The belief that one's success or failure can be brought by chance rather than their actions, is as old as time itself. We love the idea of labeling single, as well as consecutive positive events, as luck. From the luck of the Irish to good luck charms, mankind has always pushed the agenda that some people are more or less positively serendipitous than others.
The question is, does “good” or “bad” fortune guide our lives? Or do we as individuals program our subconscious to steer us in a pleasant or less desirable direction?
Depending on who is questioned on this topic, there is no doubt we would get varying opinions.
Luck is an individual perception. To some finding clean water for the day is luck and to others stumbling across a hundred-dollar bill is a blessing. But is either case coincidental? I don’t think so. Let’s take a closer look at this from a scientific stance, shall we?
It is a known fact that positive thinking affects our health, relationships, work, and pretty much every aspect of our life. If we think little of ourselves, then our RAS (Reticular Activation System) will look for evidence to support that theory because we communicate to our mind that it is an important factor. Located in the brain stem, the RAS sifts through data we either pay a lot of attention to or dismiss easily. This is done subconsciously and since the RAS is responsible for sorting through information to see what is important to us, we should focus on what it is we are telling our subconscious mind.
A person who believes they are ugly will go through their day finding all kinds of evidence to reinforce that thesis. In the same sense, someone who affirms positivity in regard to, let’s say, “good fortune”, the RAS will go to work to provide proof of that theory. As you can see, we are responsible for what comes our way. A person who constantly reminds himself of how “unlucky” they are will find corroboration.
So can we all be “lucky”?
I would say it is worth a try. In my experience, I have found that thinking and speaking positively in regard to basically everything, is a rewarding action. We attract what we fear the most because subconsciously we entertain whatever it is that we don’t want. Instead of dealing with our fears and reprogramming our subconscious, we continue to believe that it’s the way it should be (it is what it is).
I challenge you to step away from this traditionally taught “old wives' tale” and change the way you think. You will be surprised how fast your life can take a turn for the better. There is no such thing as “good” or “bad” luck. We are in charge of how we perceive things,, and we should do it positively. You can either wake up and say: “Good morning, God,” or “Good God, it's morning.” Depending on how you view every day, is exactly how your day is going to go. Be a pessimistic fella, and chances are you’re going to get the dirty end of the stick. See the world through rose-colored glasses,, and it is a sure thing that good things come your way.
As you are reading this, you can measure your level of positivity vs. negativity. If any of this leaves you thinking or feeling “humbug”, there ya go. Might want to consider changing your mindset to a more positive thinking one. What do you have to lose? For all of those who smiled at least once, attaboy. You are a positive person and maybe now that you are aware of how your RAS is trained, you even get lucky.
