Oh, hello there! What do I create, you asked? In addition to being a creator of my happiness, I also create wigs. That’s right, WIGS! Now, before our minds go wayyy left field, I’m not talking crazy, funky, cool, character-style wigs (hmm, although that would be fun to recreate someday). I create natural-looking wig units for the everyday woman.
My craft is a self-taught wig maker. I create custom wig units via sewing machine to achieve various styles for convenience and versatility. I achieve the task by taking precise measurements around the client's head in various areas to ensure the finished product is a perfect fit. Then I attach wefts of hair to a wig cap customized to those precise measurements using a sewing machine.
I started making wigs by hand a few years ago. I have a friend that would always ask me to attend events with her at the very last minute. When I say the very last minute, I mean literally the day of and sometimes only a few hours before. I would always think, “Oh no, my hair isn’t up to par”! That led me to always having a wig on hand that I could easily put on and style.
Now although that’s how I started making wigs, that’s not what inspired me to continue my craft. I became a first-time mom in December of 2018. One day while taking a shower, I noticed my hair coming out in clumps. I had read about postpartum hair shedding beforehand so I was somewhat prepared. It led me to old faithful (that’s what I like to think of my wig as)!
Becoming a new mom, I felt there were so many factors that caused a lack of confidence within oneself. It placed me in a position to empathize with individuals that are dealing with similar (or worse) situations.
Can you imagine the feeling of an individual who has begun to lose their hair to alopecia areata or cancer treatments? Well, I can definitely empathize. It turned a craft into my passion. I have always been passionate about helping others. I just didn’t realize it would be through a hobby that I picked up as a means to a quick hair fix.
My passion for creating wigs extends beyond the wear of various looks on demand. I aspire to offer custom units to individuals experiencing hair loss to help them restore their crown. Our hair is our crown. We feel powerful when we are confident in ourselves!
It can be life-changing to experience hair loss due to health or other factors which may negatively impact one's confidence. My ultimate goal is to achieve the title of cranial prosthesis specialist and accept insurance to provide quality hairpieces that are more accessible to those who need them. I would like to consider myself an equal opportunity creator (wink wink). I cannot forget about the men! I hope to soon offer hairpieces, mustaches & beards for men as well. I find it highly rewarding to be able to create a custom piece that reflects an individual's sense of style and personality.
While performing my craft, I use the Fiskars 5” Easy Action Micro-Tip Softgrip Scissors to complete quick snips of the thread and hair wefts while sewing. These scissors have been essential in ensuring that I keep my work neat and clean from start to finish. You know how those families on HGTV have a list of must-haves when searching for homes? Well, the Fiskars 5” Micro-Tip Softgrip Scissors are my must-have item for my craft. When it comes to my craft, Fiskars play a vital role in creating my happiness!
