Learning a new language can be overwhelming and seem daunting. But with time, motivation, and consistent study it can be done! Be very patient and understanding with yourself as you start to practice your new language.

Below are just five simple tips that can help you learn your new language:

1. Leave your comfort zone. Just being honest, learning a foreign language is hard work. It can get awkward and uncomfortable real quick, especially if you're already a shy person. Having a willingness to make mistakes and not take yourself too seriously will help. Learning a second language will never become more natural unless you actually put yourself out there and talk to people.

2. Seek to practice in "real life." Once again, put yourself out there and talk to people. Think of every single interaction as a learning experience, and every single conversation as a way to help you get more proficient in your new language. Don't be shy as you try to tell a joke, order a coffee, or comment on how much you like that person's shoes. In public places, strike up conversations with strangers. When a stranger talks to you on a bus or on the street, try replying. A helpful tip is to bring a notebook to write down all the new words you learn. The only failure you could possibly have is if you never try.

3. Listen. The more you expose yourself to a foreign language, the less foreign it becomes. Really listen not to just what people say but how they say it. Find all kinds of ways to listen to the language you're learning. A few ideas are listening to national music of all genres, watching YouTube videos about topics you like, as well as watching t.v. shows. The more you listen, the more your ears will get used to the sound of the language and it becomes more familiar and easier to repeat.

4. Talk to yourself. It may sound kind of weird but you know those little conversations you have in your head? Practice those conversations in the language you're learning. There's nothing wrong with talking to yourself if you don't have anyone to practice with at the moment. If you hear a phrase you'd like to use, repeat it out loud. Try ordering your favorite drink or even try giving a speech of some sort in your new language. It's okay if you don't know all the words to explain yourself. This could help build confidence for the next time you have a conversation with someone!

5. Be patient with yourself. Learning another language is hard work. It's normal for your brain to get completely foggy at times and tired after trying to practice, you may even get a headache. Remember to be patient with yourself as you would if a young child was trying to tell you a story in their limited language skills. Don't compare yourself to any other foreign language learner because you are unique and have your own set of skills!

These were just 5 simple tips to help you learn a foreign language. Oh and one more thing, never give up! Celebrate all the little victories like when you ordered a coffee in your new language, and the barista actually understood you! With time and motivation, you'll get it!
