The company has started introducing AI systems into different parts of its operations, from pharmacies and checkout lanes to fuel stations. The goal isn’t flashy technology — it’s efficiency. By analyzing data and predicting patterns, Costco hopes to run its stores more smoothly while continuing to offer competitive prices.

If the predictions are accurate, stations can ensure they have enough fuel deliveries scheduled in advance. Ideally, this means fewer supply disruptions and smoother traffic flow at the pumps.

Costco is also experimenting with AI at checkout.

Some stores have begun testing what the company calls pre-scan technology. These systems analyze items in a customer’s cart before they even reach the register, allowing employees to process purchases more quickly.

The results so far have been promising. Stores testing the technology have reported checkout times improving by roughly 20 percent.

For a high-volume retailer like Costco, even small efficiency gains can have major effects. Faster checkout means shorter lines, smoother traffic flow inside the store, and the ability to serve more customers during peak hours.
