Four Podcasts That Help Podcasters

These shows support indie podcasters.

By Frank RacioppiPublished 3 days ago 4 min read

Recently, we published an article - Five Of The Best Indie Podcasts About Podcasting. That piece focused on five excellent podcasts that support the industry and support indie podcasters.

Today's article focuses on podcasts specifically designed to assist indie podcasters. These podcasters drill down to the podcaster level of support. These podcasts are like mechanics checking under the hood. The hosts of these shows have several attributes in common - they're immensely talented, wildly creative, solutions-focused, and care deeply about helping indie podcasters.

Creators by True Fans

Creators by TrueFans is a podcast from TrueFans.fm that spotlights independent podcast creators and music artists, offering them increased visibility and a platform to connect with their fans. Hosted by Sam Sethi and Claire Waite Brown, the weekly show features a new creator, discusses platform updates for monetization and discovery, and explores trends in the podcasting and music industries. Listeners can support the podcast through micropayments called SATs, leave feedback via SuperComments, and engage with hosts on social media.

Your Mic

Creator/Host Freddy Cruz offers insights, tactics, and mindset strategies. Each episode features practical advice to help listeners build and grow a top 1% podcast. If you are a podcaster searching for a path to growth, join Freddy as he shares his experience and knowledge to guide you through the podcasting journey.

One of my favorite episodes was in September with guest Michael Osborne of the Famous & Gravy podcast. Michael, one of my favorite people, recounts how his indie podcast found success through insight, hard work, and a well-executed strategy.

One Minute Podcast Tips

One Minute Podcast Tips is designed for people who want to be better podcasters. Considering that millions are either podcasting now or have tried their hand at podcasting, that's a potentially large and motivated audience.

Host Danny Brown makes good on his promise to help people "be a better podcaster in just a minute a week."

Brown is the Head of Podcaster Support and Experience at Captivate.fm, "the world's only growth-oriented podcast hosting, distribution, analytics, and monetization platform for the serious indie podcaster."

Brown knows his stuff, and his tips range from creating a newsletter to making a decision on WAV files or MP3 files. Brown discusses the best audio editing software for beginners and a topic for experienced podcasters like using a shock mount for your microphone.

Danny Brown is one of the most knowledgeable people in the field. Plus, he's from Canada, where podcasting is booming.

The School Of Podcasting

The School of Podcasting, which is a podcast that helps you discover the power of podcasting. Founder/host Dave Jackson says: "It helps you avoid the common mistakes that podcasters make. From planning, producing, and promoting your podcast, along with all the tools and techniques. If you're looking to start a podcast or are a veteran podcaster, you can catch some great insights with this free podcast."

Jackson has been involved in podcasting since 2005, and I always enjoy the OGs of the industry because they have that panoramic view of where the industry came from and where it is heading.

Jackson explains: "Unlike many other 'geeks' who know how to podcast, I've been a technical trainer for over 20 years. This means not only do I understand the technology, but I can explain it in a plain English "geek-speak free" environment. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Education from the University of Akron (Specializing in technical education). While there are other podcast consultants, I believe my experience sets me apart with regard to helping you make sense of the entire podcasting process. I not only help with the 'how,' but I also help explain the why, and make sure you avoid the common podcasting pitfalls. I have won awards at Fortune 500 companies for my customer service. In a nutshell, I care."

Listening to episodes of his show, it's obvious that Jackson cares. He can speak in technical terms, but his goal seems to be clarity and mutual understanding for his listeners.

Jackson's credentials are impressive, though I think his most significant achievement is his care for his listeners and students. He is the author of the book Profit From Your Podcast.

In 2018, he was inducted into the Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame.

So what does Jackson talk about in his episodes? In a few words, anything related to podcasts. His episodes contain some of the most eccentric titles, from Strike Up Your Podcast: Lessons from Duck Pin Bowling to Don't Get Bitten: Identifying Predatory Practices in Podcasting.

Clearly, these shows are to help podcasters focus on independent podcasts.

Do independent podcasts need all this help because they are inferior to network-supported shows? In reality, the opposite is true. Good Hang with Amy Poehler gets massive support from Spotify Studios. Marketing, branding, distribution, promotion, finances, and tech support are all done for the show.

Independent podcasters do not have that support system. In fact, large podcast networks see them as competition to be eliminated. How do they do that? By either copycatting a successful independent show and adding a celebrity, or massing their public relations armada to drown out the indie show that is deflecting attention from their roster of shows.
