Why I Don't Have Any Song With Sister Teni - Niniola

Niniola explains

By Jide OkonjoPublished about a year ago 3 min read

Nigerian singer Niniola has a new album out called Press Play which becomes Niniola's third full-length album. Curiously for many people, as many songs as the singer has done, and as many songs as her sister Teni too have done, the two women have not been on a song together. It is something people expect should have happened by now, but yet, it hasn't.

During a new interview with City 109.1FM, Niniola was asked why this is the case, and why she and her sister Teni have never been on a song together. Here's what Niniola had to say about it.

During the interview, Niniola was asked "Why do we not have a Niniola and Teni song?" to which she responded:

NINIOLA: Why should we? It should be about good music. It will always happen when it has to happen. If you force it and it comes out and it's shit, you people will abuse us. With music, you have to feel it, it has to be the right time. That person's voice has to marry with the music. Like for instance, if I'm working in the studio, I just don't think "oh who do I want to feature?" No. If I'm working on a piece of music, I'm thinking of whose voice is going to best suit this? And that is how I work, and I'm speaking for myself like I always do.

The interviewer continued saying "People talk about wanting Nigerian female musicians to do more collaborations together, but when we think about that, we also realize that you and Teni are related and it hasn't happened as well..." at which point Niniola jumped in saying:

NINIOLA: So it just means that it's not that deep. Why don't people think about or talk about good things about the women? Pushing them forward? Like, women are doing this, they're doing that. But no, it's about rivalry. "Oh why are they not doing this?" There is nothing. If you like, dig and dig and dig, there is no gold there. In that department of rivalry or whatever, there is nothing there.

What do you think? Do you think it's also time for a Niniola and Teni song? Or do you think they don't need to give us one if the music never calls for it?
