A young man by the name of Idris Ray has his story making waves as he reveals the circumstances that led to him losing his eye and having to wear a prosthetic eye now. His actions were quite courageous (even though some people say it was a mistake what he did) but either way, his story is moving a lot of people to tears and heavy emotion. Here is Idris's story as he's shared it with the BBC.

Speaking about how his lost his eye in 2022, courageous Nigerian man Idris Ray narrates his story saying:

IDRIS RAY: On the 3rd of March, 2022, I was sleeping. Before I know, we heard "Help me, help me," inside my father's compound. So, I now stood up and decided to go and check the thing that is happening outside.

As I now reached there, I now realized that armed robbers were harrassing the girls that were staying at the house with us. So I now went to talk to my mum and dad that armed robbers are in the house. My father and I were trying to hold the door so the armed robbers will not enter. I was now trying to persuade my father that let him go inside and hide while I hold the door.

So as the armed robbers were hitting and hitting the door, they now entered the house and as they entered the house, they started hitting me with cutlass from my head to my toe. So in the process, I now saw a cutlass on the ground, I think it was their own. I now thought to myself that let me fight back since I knew I was going to die that night, let me kuku fight them.

As I pursued them out of the parlor, we then reached the outside compound and it was there I now realized that they're not just three armed robbers, they're plenty that came to the house that night. That's how they started wiping me from my head to my toe, my neck.

Another one hit me on my eye, I now fell on the ground. They hit me and hit me, and that's where I got the injury on my eye.

After the attack, I went to like six hospitals in Abuja to see if they would be able to fix my eye, and that's when they told me that the eye is gone. That I should find a way to get a prosthetic eye and that's how I got one.

My journey to healing is a very long one and I'm still healing. It was very difficult in the early stages, but I'm trying to accept what has come to me so that I can move ahead and be okay.

My message to anybody like me who has a disability is: do what will make you happy to be yourself, and move on.
