The Beacon

Fictional Story

By Alicia LeneaPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

In the darkness of the cloudy night sky there was one thing that lit up the night. One thing that gave hope to the lost visitors. One thing that showed the way back home. This was the Beacon!

New York City visitors come from all around. They travel to see the beauty and thrill, but never expect to get lost in the dark. It is not at all uncommon, but it isn’t something that crosses the mind. Getting lost in the heart of the city can be downright terrifying. That night, when it was dark and cloudy, common sense was pushed out the window with the rest of sanity. The visitors lost their minds trying to make it back to the apartment or hotel they were staying in.

They pushed and shoved each other to get to the street lights, but they weren’t on. Panicking, the visitors pulled out their phones to call for help or a loved one, because they truly thought that this was the end for them, but all they saw was a pitch black screen.

The visitors of New York City looked for New Yorkers to ask what to do or if they were to simply just die there, but no New Yorkers were around. All the building lights slowly flickered of and on and off again, until they were out completely. Not turning back on. Causing the main streets to be submerged in darkness. This was no ordinary night, one that all the visitors of New York were not ready for. They never thought this could happen to them. Why would it? They were just visiting for a weekend or a few weeks. They wanted to see the sights and have a good time, but not experience all the bad things that could happen.

They needed the help of the New Yorkers, surely they would know what was going on, but no New Yorkers were in sight. The visitors were naive enough to believe that the New Yorkers could possibly know what was going on. They were experiencing the same thing as them and when the visitors looked to their right or left at another frantic visitor, they did not realize they were looking into the face of a New Yorker. How could they have known? They were as scared at the visitors. It’s not like the New Yorker’s could possibly understand this, but the visitors thought that they should. It was their city after all.

On the main roads the street lights weren’t the only things to go out. The taxi cab’s lights went out, along with the buses, and the subway’s underground. The lights went out, but the vehicles still moved forward. Breaks were slammed out of the terror, but the brake lights were out, so cars ran into each other. One right after another.

All of New York City was in utter despair, pure fear gripped the souls of each and every person that was out and about during this unknown black out in the dead of night. It was terrifying and everyone was starting to lose hope. The city that was once beautifully light, was a massive darkness that no one could see. It blended in just like the darkness of the woods would.

But, there were a few that braved the panicked visitors and New Yorkers. They sought to light the Beacon, so everyone could have some peace of mind, while they tried to figure out the cause of this horrific event. Slowly but surely the beacon was lit and gave hope to the city.

The visitors could finally see what was in front of them. A moment before, there was no hope to be seen, but because of the brave souls that night, the visitors were given their hope back. They looked around and continued what they had been doing before everything went dark. They didn’t even remember that their phones would not turn on.

The New Yorkers, tired from a long day were able to follow the light back to their homes. They made it safe and sound within the walls. They hoped that tomorrow would be a better day, not putting much thought into what had just happened.

Visitors and New Yorkers alike found hope that night through the Beacon. Even though things were not back to the way they were before, they could all come together and find peace under the strong light given off by the Beacon.
