Advent’s Call for Peace: Restoring Justice in a Fractured America

The second Sunday of Advent, marked by the lighting of the Peace Candle, calls for restoration and healing—a message urgently needed in our divided society. As America continues to experience cultural clashes exacerbated by the erosion of rights and discriminatory rhetoric, the path toward justice and peace requires collective action.

Women’s Rights Under Attack

The 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision dismantled Roe v. Wade, stripping millions of women of federal protections for abortion access. This decision triggered a cascade of restrictive laws across states, particularly in the South and Midwest, where outright abortion bans disproportionately harm low-income women and women of color. These restrictions exacerbate existing inequities, denying bodily autonomy and deepening health disparities.

Beyond abortion rights, the backlash against gender equality has expanded. Women face legislative threats to contraception access, maternal care, and workplace protections, as political movements regress toward patriarchal norms. This erosion of autonomy underscores the need for systemic advocacy to restore women’s rights and ensure equality under the law.

Racial Injustice and Anti-Immigrant Rhetoric

Communities of color—particularly Black and brown individuals—continue to face systemic discrimination and divisive rhetoric. Anti-immigrant narratives frame asylum seekers and undocumented individuals as threats to public safety, fueling xenophobia. Policies like the increased militarization of the U.S.-Mexico border and family separations perpetuate harm and violate human rights.

Meanwhile, Black Americans continue to endure racial profiling, economic disparities, and systemic inequities. Despite accounting for 13% of the population, Black individuals are disproportionately affected by police violence, unemployment, and wealth gaps. Efforts to dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs further stymie progress, erasing tools for addressing racial injustice and fostering cultural understanding.

The Assault on LGBTQ+ Rights

The LGBTQ+ community—particularly transgender individuals—has faced an unprecedented wave of legislative attacks. In 2023 alone, over 500 anti-LGBTQ+ bills were introduced across the country. These include bans on gender-affirming care for trans youth, restrictions on public accommodations, and censorship of LGBTQ+ topics in schools. Such policies create a culture of fear and erasure, forcing many to live without safety or dignity.

Drag bans and the criminalization of queer expression also reflect a broader push to silence LGBTQ+ voices. These efforts violate fundamental freedoms and highlight the urgent need to defend civil rights for all.

People with Disabilities: Systemic Barriers Persist

Disability rights face ongoing challenges, including attempts to weaken protections under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Rollbacks in accessibility measures and workplace accommodations disproportionately impact individuals who already face systemic barriers. Inclusion and equity for people with disabilities are critical components of a just society that values all its members.

Restoring Peace Through Justice

Advent’s message reminds us that peace is not the absence of conflict but the active presence of justice. Healing requires addressing systemic inequities and fostering a culture of inclusion. To rebuild trust and strengthen the rule of law, we must prioritize dignity, accountability, and shared humanity.

Here are concrete steps individuals and communities can take:

1. Support Policy Change: Advocate for laws that protect reproductive rights, LGBTQ+ freedoms, and racial equity. Reject policies that perpetuate exclusion.

2, Engage in Education: Challenge harmful rhetoric by promoting honest conversations about race, gender, and human rights in schools and communities.

3, Build Solidarity: Connect across divides to foster understanding and amplify the voices of marginalized groups.

Advent’s Peace Candle represents the hope of restoration. By embracing justice and inclusion, we can move toward a society that honors freedom and dignity for all. Each of us has the power to act—through advocacy, education, and solidarity—to light the way toward healing in a divided nation.
