"A Wolf Shepherd Boy"

A lad named Kieran lived in a little, abandoned village tucked away between whispering woodlands and gloomy hills. As the village's shepherd, it was his responsibility to keep an eye on the sheep. He spent his days caring for the animals on the precipitous slope that led far into the forest. Until recently, Kieran had never been terrified of the woods.

The unusual events in the woods were frequently discussed in whispers by the people. They asserted that ancient animals and shadows that lurked just beyond the woods haunted the forests. However, Kieran dismissed such tales as mere superstition because he was young and courageous.

Kieran led the flock up the hill for their final grazing of the day one evening as the sun was setting. A chilly breeze had started to blow, bringing with it an odd smell. He saw that the sheep were huddled together, bleating in fright, as though they felt something in the darkness. Kieran, however, merely whistled to soothe them while shaking his head dismissively.

Then he heard the purposeful, crisp rustle of leaves, too loud to be the wind. His heart pounded in his chest as he froze. He turned his head slowly in the direction of the sound. A set of bright eyes gazed back at him from between the trees.

Kieran's throat tightened each breath. It was not a wolf. Not exactly. Despite being larger than any wolf he had ever seen, the creature possessed the distinctive shape of one. Its eyes pierced the encroaching evening like two flaming embers, and its fur was as dark as night. It watched him without moving, and Kieran could almost hear his own heartbeat in the stillness.

Then the thing moved, its eyes never leaving Kieran's face as it crept forward with eerie grace. An cold chill went up the boy's spine. He staggered back, but the sheep were already dispersed, bleating furiously as they fled in all directions as panic set in.

Kieran's voice trailed off in the stifling silence as he attempted to beckon them back. The wolf—no, it was not a wolf—was drawing near with slow, almost purposeful steps. Then it started talking.

"You are different from the others."

Kieran's breath came in short spurts as his thoughts raced. Although the monster had spoken, the words were not what he had anticipated. It had a deep, old, guttural voice.

"You... you are able to talk?" Kieran's voice was hardly more than a whisper as he stumbled.

"Of course," said the monster. "You cannot imagine how long I have been here. longer than the existence of your kind."

Kieran's terror paralyzed him. For a brief moment, he believed he saw something else in the creature's eyes—something familiar, something human—as its stare softened a little. As though thinking about him, it cocked its head.

The creature went on, "Boy, you were designed for more than this." Although you are a shepherd, you do not care about sheep. You are a wolf's shepherd.

Kieran's thoughts were racing. "What do you mean?"

The beast growled quietly, but it was a far darker growl than one of aggression. "As the forest's guardian, I am the last of my species. And you... you are supposed to replace me. Boy, you are descended from the ancients. You have been selected.

Kieran gave a furious shake of his head. "No! I am only a boy. I have no idea what you are discussing."

With its enormous body looming above him, the beast advanced one more step. "You are aware that it is true. You have known all along."

Even though Kieran's heart was racing, something within of him sparked. The tenuous connection started to make sense. His mother never talked about her background, and his father had always been aloof. Since he was young, he had been haunted by strange nightmares, seeing images of forests, wolves, and darkness encroaching on the light.

Satisfied, the creature's eyes glowed. "You will quickly discover your actual path. Once the moon is full, you will comprehend."

The thing suddenly sprang forward—not with claws, but with a force that sent Kieran's mind reeling with visions. He noticed the unending, huge woodlands. The wolves he saw were more than animals, more than creatures. One of them, Kieran, was a guardian, a protector of an old kingdom.

Kieran was left breathless and confused as the vision vanished as swiftly as it had appeared.

The animal has vanished.

Now dispersed, the sheep had gone back to their hiding spots, unaware of what had happened. As though nothing had ever happened, Kieran stood there, the wind now motionless. However, something had altered inside of him.

He was no longer merely a shepherd.

He was unique.

And Kieran realized it when the full moon rose high in the sky that night. He would be pursued by the wolves. Their new shepherd would be theirs. He would also take their call.
