The Spirit of Giving: A Warlock for the Far North

When you need a warlock who isn't afraid to give, be it presents or fisticuffs.

He's about to give someone a big present.

Ivan smirked. The barbarian punched him and he barely felt it. He punched him back, sending him back a good five feet. The barbarian charged, but Ivan twinkled his nose, disappearing in a puff of smoke and appearing behind him, looking a little more refreshed. He then hit the barbarian with a club he had himself made, with a lovely grip and a large clobbering end. The barbarian fell to the ground and didn’t get up. Ivan walked outside to a waiting sled, pulled by four glowing reindeer. “Tell him this is my region, but I’d love to drink with him!” Getting into the sleigh, he jerked the reins and flew off into the night.

Warlocks from the Far North are a weird breed. They have learned to be ferocious as a way to compensate for their lack of combat readiness, a trait that has endeared them to their barbarian brethren. They have also learned to be generous, giving gifts whenever possible, a trait that has endeared them to those living hard lives. Their respect for the land is well-known, and they respect the animals they hunt, a trait that has endeared to the druids. Because of this, they have found the Spirit of the North, or possibly found by him, and agreed to be his ambassadors.

This makes the warlocks of the Far North a weird breed, as ferocious as the North Wind, always willing to help the local animals, and always with a gift or two for those who need it.

[Design Considerations: Yes, this is an obvious attempt at giving Santa Claus his own warlocks, and draws from his reputation with animals and combat, as well as his ability to talk to anyone and teleport down chimneys. As such, they serve as excellent friends to druids and barbarians, and multi-classing with them is not an entirely bad idea. They make excellent mounted characters as well as craftsman, and some do like to get engaged in brawls, so Crafter, Durable, Elemental Adept (cold), Grappler, Inspring Leader, Skill Expert, Tavern Brawler, and Tough make ideal feats. Magic Initiate may be worth considering for the elemementalism, mage hand, mending, or ray of frost contrips, and fog cloud, ice knife, or sleep spells. Otherwise, they like being in furs and anything warm, and prefer cutlasses and large blades.]

Level 3: Giving Spells

You always have certain spells ready. When you reach the level noted you gain the spells listed for that level, and they are considered prepared.

  • 3rd Level: calm emotions, comprehend languages, find steed, misty step, speak with animals
  • 5th Level: haste, elemental weapon (cold only)
  • 7th Level: dominate beast, freedom of movement
  • 9th Level: cone of cold, creation

Level 3: Skill Mastery

The warlock gains a small package of skills: Animal Handling, Pilot (Sleigh), and Woodcarving tools.

Level 6: Misty Escape

The warlock becomes very good at getting into and out of areas by using the misty step. He can use misty step without using a spell slot a number of times equal to Charisma modifier (minimum once). This number refreshes with a Long Rest.

Also, he can choose one of the two effects when he uses the ability:

Refreshing Step: You or one creature within 10' gains 1d10 Temporary Hit Points.

Disappearing Step: You have the Invisible condition until the start of your next turn or until you attack or cast a spell.

Level 10: Arctic Resistance

Your patron is from a cold place with physical challenges. As such, you gain resistance to cold and bludgeoning damage.

Level 14: Summon Sleigh

The warlock can summon a magic sleigh. The sleigh is under the effect of fly, can hold up to six regular-sized individuals and/or equivalent cargo, is pulled by four illusionary reindeer, and lasts for the concentration of the warlock, up to one hour. It also has AC 15 and 50 HP.
