My First D&D Session
A wild introduction to the amazing role-playing game.

In January of 2019, a few months after I moved, I made some new friends that were part of a Dungeons and Dragons group. Around May I got invited to join them, so I thought why not give it a try? I'd heard a lot about it and thought it would be fun.
That Sunday I arrived an hour early to make my character, a 5th level Tiefling Rogue named Nerithyra. I decided to go with an Arcane Trickster as my subclass of Rogue. The DM and I went over backstory, picking spells, and everything else. I was pretty excited by this point. I learned the party consisted of a Bard, Barbarian, Monk, and a Fighter. I wasn't sure what any of that really meant at the time, and I didn't know who was playing what. It became quite the guessing game for me base don what they used throughout the session. It was fin, though, nonetheless.
When the others arrived, we began our session. The rest of the party was in a magic college town, where a party was to be held that night. While they waited, they spent some time in the tavern. That's where Nerithyra was introduced.
Walking into the tavern, she sees a finely dressed half-elf at the bar, drinking. Being a rogue, she decided, "Well he looks quite drunk, why not try to pickpocket him?" She sidled over to him and struck up some conversation to try and distract him while forming a plan.
"I wouldn't try it if I were you, friend. Nothing worthwhile in these pockets. Wouldn't want you to get caught," The man smiled, held out his hand, and introduced himself. "I'm Dagless, nice to meet you."
"Uh, Nerithyra..." She muttered, quite taken aback. How did he know what she was planning?
"Nerithyra. I like it, so what are you in this fine town for?" He lifts an eyebrow, then continues on, not waiting for a response. "Probably with the college, eh? You students are always up to something, aren't you?"
"Well I suppose so, yeah," It wouldn't be so bad for him to think of me as a college student, now would it?
"Me and my friends are going to that DeGull's party later, why don't you join us? I'm sure you were already planning on being there anyhow." He gestures to a group sitting around a table, an elf in heavy armor, a very large half-orc with little clothing, and a dragonborn in loose flowing robes. He leads her over to them and introduces them all.
"This is Voric, Faulk, and Korrin. Everyone, this is Nerithyra, my new friend," Dagless smiles proudly and the group share a few drinks before the party.
Getting to the party, Nerithyra learned that Voric had written a book on the creatures of the land. He mentioned this DeGull fellow had plagiarized it and taken all the credit himself. Faulk seemed very disinterested in the party, and Korrin was quite neutral on it all. While Dagless, on the other hand, was very adamant that they all enjoy the party. Especially the drinks.
At the party, Charles DeGull gave some grand speech that devolved into a fight between him and Voric. DeGull used some strange watch-like device and altered how everyone remembered it. He made it seem as though Voric started it and he was only defending himself against false accusations. During all of this, Faulk, Dagless, and Nerithyra were discussing the recent poisoning of the Grand Magistrate. This gave Nerithyra an idea, no one liked this DeGull, why not poison him too? Suggesting this to the other two, they agreed. Getting a drink from a waiter, she discreetly tried to poison it and the waiter gave her a small spider ring.
"Go to the Singed Owl, find the circle of the spider. And when you get there, just remember this 'don't worry I am the venom'," He whispers and slips off into the crowd. Confused, she continues on her mission. Making her way up to DeGull, she offers him the drink.
"You seem like you could use a drink," She offers sweetly, holding the glass toward him.
"Ah, but of course. Who wouldn't want a drink at a party like this?" He smiles, taking out a strip of paper as he takes the glass from her. He dips the paper into the glass, testing the liquid. He tuts as he watches her. "Can't be too careful since the incident with the Grand Magistrate, you know.
"Ah, of course."
"You didn't do it, did you?" He raises an eyebrow.
"Oh no, of course not. I could never," She shakes her head, thinking he was asking about the Grand Magistrate.
"I'll believe you. You did come here with my good friend Voric, did you not?" He grins maliciously and starts to walk away.
"Alright, new plan," Nerithyra says, regrouping with the others. "We steal form him and leave."
"Why would we do that?" Korrin asks skeptically.
"Because he's full of himself and no one likes him."
"She has a point," Voric agrees, seeming all too eager to slight the man. With that, Nerithyra slips back off to where DeGull is distracted, surrounded by others. It was almost too easy getting the strange watch, along with a wand. After getting the items she makes her way back to the others. Together they head out and back to the tavern where they stay for the night.
Deep in the night the party wakes to Voric calling out for a fight. Faulk bursts through the wall of the room, itching for a fight. Nerithyra and Korrin look through the Faulk-sized hole in the wall and shrug. In Voric's room is a man Nerithyra had never seen before, but the others didn't look happy seeing him. Least of all Dagless, who's sleep was interrupted.
When the fight started to go against him, the intruder leapt through the window turning into a hawk. Faulk jumps out after him, soon followed by Voric. Not sure what else to do, Nerithyra, not doing well, follows suit and immediately falls unconscious from the fall. When she comes to, they've killed the man and taken his head. Along with a spear they call "Windvane".
"Well what now? We can't just let everyone find out we killed this guy."
"We could frame someone else?" Nerithyra suggests.
"Charles DeGulle," Dagless grins. They all look at him as he casts a spell and assumes the form of DeGull. He strips himself naked and takes the head, proceeding to run around the town as DeGull.
