Journal Entry - September 14, 2023

Early morning light shimmered off the liquid surface of the swimming pool. I observed the taupe bottom as the stream of air bubbles escaped my wife, Lara’s body. My yearlong battle had come down to this moment. The cause of her defeat was greed and the love of gold. Rays of direct sunlight beamed through the gaps in the pine trees nearby and inched toward the calm waters. Weighted in gold chains, her eyes bulged, and her mouth gaped with silent screams at her plight. Thrashing to and fro, she sought to free herself, but I had done my job well. The gold lock binding her chains held.

The sunlight refracted through the blue waters with its spikes of purity. The golden rays slashed her like daggers of heavenly justice. Her jaw, fully extended, snapped like a barracuda, and her fangs hooked the water empty of prey. My captive's exotic, bikini-clad body and tanned flesh smoldered black as her face distorted itself to the reptilian demon she had become within. Her flesh collapsed into a black cloud as the purity of the solar power transformed what was once illusively beautiful into dust.

I flipped the remote switch of the pool's vacuum system. The black mass snaked towards the filtering system like a storm traversing the sea and disappeared into the wasteland.

Tears, I had none, for those had been shed for my wife a year earlier. I had begged her to stay out of the cemetery. Intrigued by the non-dead and her anthropology studies, she had fallen prey to another who had wiled her with his vampire charms.

I dove into the pool, reset the bear trap beneath the gold chains, and awaited nightfall when her paramour, her murderer, would seek her out. Tonight, I will entrap him. Tomorrow, with the sun's rising, I will rid the earth of the one who consumed my wife's life and fear no more.

More will come, but this is my life now.
