The Hidden Road

A Hitchhiker's Journey of Allergies, Mislaid Maps, and the Secrets of Lost Creek

By Chris PaulPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

A young woman named Lily used to reside in a small, picturesque town tucked between soaring mountains. Lily made the decision to set out on a journey because she had an adventurous spirit and a desire to see the world. She embarked on an exhilarating hitchhiking adventure with nothing more than a backpack and a sense of adventure.

Lily was standing at the edge of the town on a bright morning, eagerly waving her thumb in the air, hoping for a kind stranger to pick her up and share a ride. As luck would have it, an old man driving a rusty pickup truck pulled over, and he gave her a warm welcome inside.

The elderly man identified himself as Mr. Jenkins as they traveled along the winding roads. He talked fondly of the sights he had seen and told tales of his own travels. Lily had no idea that this encounter would set off a chain of events that she would never forget.

Mr. Jenkins noticed Lily's constant sniffling and rubbing of her eyes after several hours of travel. He asked if she was okay, worried. Lily acknowledged that she had severe allergies, especially to pollen and particular kinds of flowers. Despite her best efforts, it was difficult for her to stay away from triggers in the lush environment around them.

Mr. Jenkins was determined to help and remembered a route on the map that would take them away from the blooming fields and into a drier area. Unbeknownst to them both, the map they were using contained a critical error—a road that was incorrectly labeled.

Blindly following the directions on the map, they soon came to a fork in the road and found themselves on a dusty, rough path. The landscape changed from lush greenery to desolate areas. Lily's allergies were relieved, but they soon realized they were going in the wrong direction.

Hours went by, and Lily started to worry. They had traveled far from any traces of civilization and deep into uncharted territory. The once-jovial atmosphere became tense as the sun set, leaving them in a long shadow.

They came across a small, worn signpost just as all hope seemed to be lost. They were intrigued and followed the sign down a rocky path because it said "Lost Creek: Population 20." Their curiosity won out over their trepidation.

To their surprise, they discovered Lost Creek to be a small town tucked away in a valley. They were warmly welcomed by the locals, who opened the doors to their modest homes. They offered Lily herbal remedies to treat her allergies while telling stories by a roaring fire.

Weeks turned into days as Lily and Mr. Jenkins settled into the easygoing way of life in Lost Creek. The dry air helped Lily's allergies go away, and she found comfort in the villagers' company. Mr. Jenkins also experienced a sense of belonging that he had not felt in a long time.

One night, Lily and the village elder were stargazing when she spotted a well-known constellation. She had seen it on the flag of her home town, hundreds of miles from Lost Creek. She joyfully informed Mr. Jenkins and the villagers of her discovery, realizing that they had indeed taken a detour in the right direction.

Lily and Mr. Jenkins said goodbye to their new friends and expressed gratitude for their time in Lost Creek. Armed with the proper map this time, they set out on a new route. The memories of Lost Creek would always have a special place in their hearts, even though they were leaving behind a place that had unknowingly turned into their haven.

Thus, the hitchhiker, the allergy, and the miscalculation on the map sent Lily and Mr. Jenkins on a detour that resulted in new friendships, healing, and a greater appreciation for the actual journey.
