From: My Future Self

A story about a mysterious package and an alternate timeline.

By Rika LekayPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

Knock. Knock.

"Huh? I wasn't expecting anyone to meet me today," I muttered with a puzzled look on my face. "I'm off work today, I paid my bills, and I don't have many friends around town. I don't know who it could be."

Knock. Knock.

"I hate it when people knock. It gives me anxiety whether to open the door or stay quiet and hope they go away," I whispered to myself.

Knock. Knock.

"Miss, I know you're in there. Just open up, it's UPS," a muffled voice on the other side of the door muttered.

"Why?" I asked curiously. "I didn't buy anything."

"You've received a package," the voice muttered.

"From whom?" I replied with a puzzled tone.

"Your future self," the muffled voice replied. "Where do you want it? I've got other places to be and if you're not gonna come out, at the very least, could you please tell me where to put it?"

"Ok, one, slow down. There's no way in hell you can receive packages from your future self. Two, just set it next to my door--" I replied.

Five minutes later, I could hear the UPS truck moving away from my place. "My future self, what a character. Trying to make me laugh, I already fake-laugh at work all day with stupid jokes," I chuckled.

To my surprise, he was actually telling the truth. Sure enough, there was a brown, paper package that was from me but five years later. "How the...what?" I looked at the package in dismay. I couldn't believe it. "How did my future self mail a package to me?"

I took the brown package inside and went straight to the computer. It was time to do some research. If any company is able to master interdimensional time-traveled mailing items, whatever the heck that would be called. I finally found my culprit. "Wait, all signs point to Amazon?" I thought to myself, still looking puzzled.

"This is all so much for me to comprehend. How did I miss all this news? Even better question: what's in that package? What could my future self have to give me?" I thought to myself.

"I guess, there's nothing else to do but open the package." I shrugged and grabbed a butter knife from my kitchen, and started peeling off the tape of the package. I opened the packaged and found a strange envelope with no stamp on it, a ton of pens, sketchbooks, and notebooks of all sizes and colors.

I opened up the envelope, took out the piece of folded, mint green paper. Then I unfolded it and read the letter:

"Hello, past-me,

I know this was probably a weird item to receive, and you're probably confused as to why I sent a package to... well... myself. I wanted to help you achieve your dream much faster than ever. I also wanted to say that you can achieve your dream because I am the result of that. Just keep doing what you're passionate about and you'll achieve success. It'll come, just be patient.

Love,

Your Future Self."

I couldn't believe my eyes what I just read. I held the letter close to my chest in relief that there was finally someone who believes in me, and it happens to be myself. It was such a thoughtful note that I needed to gain more confidence in myself.

My eyes gazed at the wide assortment of colorful pens and notebooks. Without hesitation, I grabbed the pens and notebooks and placed them on the oak side table next to the black loveseat. I began doodling out crazy, future idea concepts to write about, with no time to waste. This was only the beginning.
