A Beginner's Guide to Reading Tarot Cards

Tarot reading is an accessible and exciting practice that anyone can engage in. In this essay, we will explore how to get started with reading tarot cards and uncover the secrets behind this intriguing art form. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced practitioner, these tips will help you on your journey to becoming a good tarot reader.

Getting Started:

Just Start!

Firstly, it's important to note that you don't need permission or a gifted deck from someone else to begin reading tarot. You have the freedom to choose and purchase your own deck that resonates with you. Tarot is not a secret society with exclusive access—it's open to all. I'm delighted to share these tips with you to help you become a tarot reader for yourself. It might ruffle a few feathers when I say that anyone can read tarot. You can do this!

Acquiring the Tools:

To start your tarot reading journey, you can download my free tarot keywords cheat sheet, which provides helpful keywords to get you started. Additionally, you can explore different decks in my online store, where I link various proper tarot decks that I use. Remember to have fun with your deck selection and find one that speaks to you. Initially, it may feel overwhelming, but reading tarot is actually a straightforward process that doesn't require any supernatural or psychic abilities. Trust yourself and believe that you can do it.

Understanding the Tarot Deck:

The traditional tarot deck consists of 78 cards and is a structured system. Each card holds a traditional keyword and fits into the overall narrative of tarot. The Major Arcana comprises 22 cards that represent our personal human journey. The remaining cards are divided into four suits—Swords, Wands, Pentacles, and Cups—which symbolize different aspects of life, such as intellect, creativity, emotions, and money/work. When major and minor Arcana cards are combined, they tell a comprehensive story. Familiarizing yourself with the deck and learning the meanings of the cards will enable you to interpret the story they unfold.

Tarot as a Tool:

It's essential to recognize that tarot is just a deck of cards and a tool for guidance. You can even use a regular playing deck for tarot readings. Tarot helps uncover hidden insights, provides answers to questions, and offers a deeper understanding of our human experiences and cycles. Therefore, you can read tarot for yourself with confidence and without hesitation. As a tarot reader, I assure you that you have the ability to read and interpret the cards for yourself.

Choosing Your Approach:

When someone is interested in learning tarot, it's important to understand their preferred approach. Some individuals may want to learn the traditional tarot system, exploring the history, symbols, and original cards. Others may be more inclined towards intuition and want to enjoy the process while learning tarot. Both approaches are valid and can lead to rewarding experiences. Exploring different theme decks or modern interpretations can also enhance your connection with the cards.

Beware of Counterfeit Decks:

It's crucial to be cautious when purchasing tarot decks, especially from sources like Wish, as they may sell counterfeit decks. Authentic decks should have an ISBN number or SKU, while fake ones often have a QR code instead.

Supporting the artists and creators by purchasing genuine decks ensures that they receive proper credit for their work and they usually have a companion book or pamphlet to go with them.

Learning Resources:

Various books accompanying tarot decks provide examples of card spreads and three-card readings. Practicing with these spreads is an effective way to hone your skills. Additionally, many tarot creators have social media pages where they share tips and tricks, allowing you to learn from their insights. You can follow my Facebook or Instagram for tarot tips & tricks.

Ultimately, after you understand the keywords, trust yourself with how you read tarot. We all read in our own way using the basics as that knowledge.

Developing a Connection with Your Deck:

When you acquire a new deck, take the time to connect. Flip through all the cards, look at each card, and see how it makes you feel. What colors pop out, what way are the people looking, and are there animals in the card?

If your intuition notices something, go with that thought and see how the cards around it connect. Remember to play play play with your cards.

You can ask them questions about using them and remember to have fun with them.

Start by reading for yourself and get comfortable holding, looking at, and putting together the cards!
