Chapter Four

Trenton stretched and got out of bed. Though the shades were drawn, she could see the earliest rays of sunlight peeking through, and she didn't want to waste too much time in bed when she could be out looking for employment. Trenton looked around the room, trying to spot a clock that might give her some indication as to what time it was. However, the room was completely void of electronics.

Trenton switched on the lamp and walked across the room to where she had left her bag. There was nothing there. Frustrated, she left the room and walked downstairs, finding Pam in the kitchen.

"Good morning sleepy head," Pam said, flipping something on the stove with a spatula. "The coffee is hot, and the eggs and sausages are almost done. Why don't you take a seat?"

"I appreciate it," Trenton said, trying to be polite even though she was irritated. "But I actually thought that I'd get dressed and head out. I don't want to burn daylight."

"But surely you have time to eat," Pam replied. "The clothes that you had in your bag are in the dryer right now, and it will be at least forty-five minutes before they are done."

Trenton looked closely at the other woman. She was sure that she had taken her bag into the room that she was sleeping in, but maybe, she had forgotten it downstairs. She wasn't sure. "I've been looking for that bag," Trenton finally said. "I must have left it behind before going to bed."

"No, you took it with you," Pam said, laying a couple of sausages onto a plate. "But you are a very sound sleeper, so I figured I would surprise you with clean clothes when you woke up."

"So, you went into my room while I was sleeping?" Trenton asked. At this point, she was a little uncomfortable. She didn't like the thought of Pam walking around her room while she was sleeping.

She must have made a face because Pam's expression changed to one of sympathy. "I'm sorry," she said. "I just thought I would do something nice for you. I didn’t mean to impose."

Trenton instantly felt bad. The other woman had done so much for her. She had gotten her a cabin, gave her a place to sleep, and fed her. She didn't want to be ungrateful. "Look it's fine," Trenton said. "I am happy that I know where my stuff is."

"Yes, everything should be safe and sound," Pam smiled, bringing her a plate of food. "Now, eat up. You have got to be hungry."

Pam sat down next to her and the two filled the next moments eating the large plates of food in front of them while making small talk. Trenton still didn't know too much about the other woman, and besides the pictures on the walls in her room and the photos that Pam had shown her while she was in the hospital, she still didn't know much about her childhood. It was mysterious to her how two people could enjoy so much conversation without learning anything about one another. It was just uncanny.

Trenton finished her plate and brought it to the sink. "Thank you for breakfast," she told the other woman. "I appreciate your kindness."

"Not a problem," Pam said. "Your clothes should be ready if you want to get dressed."

"Thank you for washing them," Trenton replied. "Where by chance is the dryer?"

"Downstairs," Pam said, pointing to a door on the side of the kitchen. "I can get them if you like."

"No, that's fine," Trenton said. "I have to do something for myself."
