Attempts were made to divide the river—maps drawn, borders placed, rights claimed. The water ignored them all. It flooded lines, blurred edges, reclaimed land. Those who tried to possess it exhausted themselves. Those who learned to pass through it felt carried. The river taught that what sustains life cannot be owned without being diminished.
